Fotodiox nikon(g)-m43 adaptor work with electronically faulty Nikon 17-55mm lens?

Hi, apologies for the clumsy title & not sure if this is the right forum for this question but I have an af101 so...

Have seen a Nikon 17-55mm 2.8 dx lens going very cheap - the problem is the electronics are broken so it will neither auto focus or change aperture electronically via Nikon camera. For my uses - with the Af101 this is seemingly not a big issue as i would be using it manually

However I am wondering if my Fotodiox nikon g lens to m43 adaptor would be able to physically work the aperture of this lens? Im not sure exactly how these adaptors with aperture control work - I have only used it with nikon 80-200 2.8 which already has manual aperture control. The 17-55mm is a dx lens with no aperture ring - will the adaptors aperture ring be able to work for this lens?
Also does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to get this lens working electronically again (am thinking of getting a Nikon for stills)?

Any help would be most appreciated...thankyou

Hmmm. I believe the Nikons have an internal motor for FOCUS - but not for aperture control; I think it's still up to the camera to grab the aperture interface and physically move it. In the same way, the Nikon adapters with aperture control physically hook onto this same mechanical interface to change the aperture.

In the case of the lens you mention - not having electronic auto-focus control wouldn't be a problem (you could still manually focus the lens yourself) - but if they are saying that APERTURE movement is broken, then it may be a physical issue.

Is it at a dealer that might also sell an adapter with aperture control? (then you could try it out for yourself).

If you've found a 17-55 "going cheap," my advice is to grab it, get a Novoflex adapter, and use it as-is. I have been told that repairing these lenses is very expensive. (The motors are expensive to purchase.) Use it as a manual aperture lens and enjoy it.

BTW, how cheap is "very cheap?"

Thanks for the response Steve - unfortunately its on ebay, have asked if aperture can be controlled via an adaptor but no response yet, but doubt they have adaptor to try, seller seems to be selling nikon photo stuff.

This is what is said in the listing
"Description: Cosmetically the condition of body is excellent. The Front glass and rear glass looks perfect, no scratches. This lens looks clean inside and outside, no fungus. The aperture blades are clean and perfect. No oil on blades... Electronically it has failed.Problem: The aperture system does not work when attached to a camera. You can not operate the aperture using camera control. It is stuck on the lowest aperture f32 or f22 not sure which. So the photographs come out underexposed. The auto focus system does not work, so you can only focus it manually.
This lens needs repairing. Once the electronics have been sorted you will have a great lens"
Not sure if the aperture is actually broken or just the electronic connection....as you mention the Nikon adaptors physically connect with the aperture mechanically, am presuming that would allow aperture control but if its physically broken then its not much good to me, already have canon fit eos lens fixed open

jdesignhi - already have fotodiox adaptor with aperture control, so the question was really to see if any of theses type of adaptors would be able to adjust the aperture - you think it would?

Perhaps you can contact Nikon? I think it would probably work. I have this same lens with the fotodiox mounted on my AF100 - got mine at Nikon online store reconditioned. Most videographers go with the 17-35mm but it's more $$$ and if you can grab on good deal on this one it sounds good.
The seller might also be able to clarify if you can adjust the lens manually - only says in description that camera control won't work.

thanks SP, yes have asked for clarification, will see what the answer is, will ask Nikon tomorrow....good to know the fotodiox works when the lens does

If you have a look at the back of the Nikon lens you will notice a small flange that sticks out. Your Fotidiox G adaptor will physically move that flange to change the aperture, so it doesnt matter if the electronics are working in the lens.
