Fostex FR-2, Walnuts and Lung Candy

So I'm sitting here eating walnuts and reading the PDF manual on this Fostex FR-2 that I just bought via eBaby.

Walnuts really get old after about the first 15...I should really close the bag but for some reason I just can't stop.

Anyway, I bought the FR-2 for location audio and plan on pairing it with either a mixpre or a 302...DANG IT...My hand reached into the walnut bag again! Luckily, I caught myself.

Anyway Anyway, I've been attempting to record some voiceovers directly into my DVX100b and just pumping them into Vegas via Firewire.

I'm assuming that if I bought something like a mobilepre or an M-box Mini or an M-audio 410 that the preamps would be superior to the dvx. Oops...I mean DVX. ***Now I need something to kill the taste of the walnuts. I wonder if we still have that Rocky Road ice cream in the freezer in the garage?***

SouthBySouthWest uses an FMR RNP stereo preamp that he records (I'm assuming) into a digi 003R. Only Tony the Tiger could provide the necessary emphasis on the word GREAT that describes the level of presence he's managed to attain.

Anyway Anyway Anyway, is there any way to connect the FR-2 or Mixpre or 302 directly to my PC to be able to use the preamps to record voiceovers, and thereby save myself the trouble and expense of buying one of the above mentioned items (excluding the ice cream)?

For anyone paying close attention, you could have just skipped the first 6 paragraphs of this post and suffered little for it, if at all.

I have a bag of pistachios that's singing a siren song now..... Thx.

Lessee here... Couldn't you run line level into the Fostex from the 302 (or whatever has the best preamp) and pass the signal through the Fostex's SPDIF out into the SPDIF in of any old low-budg USB/FW interface, thus bypassing the USB/FW device's lesser analog pres? Does the Fostex support live passthrough like that?

That sounds EVEN MORE complicated than human digestion.

I'll have to look into the live passthrough on the FR-2 in the PDF manual once I finish my RRIC*.

Actually, what would you suggest using for VO recording in my situation? The only reason I even have a mic in my office is solely for VO stuff for narration. No music. No singing. No choir jammed in my 11x9 room. Just me and my pc, etc. etc.

What sort of audio interface do you have now on your PC? If you just have the OEM soundcard with its questionable qualities I gather you're looking to replace it? Since you'll have good preamps in your SD302 all you really need is a line level input A/D converter with Firewire or USB to the computer. How about something like this ...

I have one of M-Audio's Delta series interfaces and I really like it. It's got a breakout box that connects via a PCI card in your computer. Doesn't have its own preamps, just takes 1/4" balanced signal into your computer. Also has coax and optical inputs on the card. I've gotten some incredibly clean signal input on that baby (I'm of the old school that still does all my processing using analog outboard gear--it just sounds so much better that way!). Once my sound has been processed I use the Delta simply to bring it into the computer for last-minute processing that I can't do outboard and then to production on CD master for the replication company.

I've used the same pattern for VOs in video work. Check into a decent aural exciter if you want good presence in your VOs. (I say decent because a good one will run you several $k)

My personal weakness is semi-sweet chocolate chips and craisins.

Then again, though it might not be as convenient, I guess I could just record through the 302 to the FR-2 and then just IMPORT the files into Vegas.

Somehow this doesn't seem as convenient as having a USB/firewire enabled preamp plugged directly into my laptop in my office that I can just plug a mic into but I'll take it if it keeps me from having to spend another $500.00.

If I just want to take audio into my computer for narration via USB, what should I use? I process after, not before.

Methinks this is actually the most prudent and cost-effective strategy for your situation.

I agree - definitely the best method.
