Massdrop has a great deal going on a pair of Fostex active speakers (and an active amp too!). Linky: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/fostex-pm0-3-active-speaker-system

I'm looking to replace my 9-year old target refurbished edifier 2.1 set I got when I was a freshman in high school. I'd like to listen to music with this speakers but also get a accurate representation of sound for usage while mixing audio for video. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of Fostex being good or bad for studio mixing?

I searched this thread for the term "fostex" and found nothing, so I'm thinking they're more for listening and less for mixing, but thought I would ask anyways!

Your link requires site regsitration to see the listing, and I really don't care to sign up. Fostex monitor options listed HERE. Looking at your link, it seems you were considering the PM0.3 monitors, which are nothing more than glorified multimedia speakers and not professional audio monitors.

What is your intended application, or, what do you mean by "studio monitors"? That can a couple of things. Are you going to be using them simply to listen as you edit video? Are you expecting accurate monitors for DAW/audio post work? Also, is the room in which you'll be using these monitors properly treated?

That aside, Fostex hasn't become a household name for critical monitoring. We used to use their 6301 series all the time as confidence monitors for the cart in Video Village, and in the tape room racks (back when all the edit bays were tape-based). They were great for that (still are).

I am sorry about the link, didn't know you had to be registered. My intended use is:

I want to, if possible, get an intermediate solution. Am I a paid SFX artist, sound engineer, Foley artist, or do I have aspirations of becoming that? No. I'm a hobbyist at best when it comes to sound design. Considering that, I will most likely be in a room that is untreated, but who knows, maybe in the future when I have a more permanent living solution, I'll consider it!

I have a set of JBL 3 Series that I really like for desktop audio monitoring. You can check 'em out at your local Guitar Center and get a feel for how they'll sound.

If you're in an untreated room, you aren't going to get "studio mixing" results. Treatment is fairly easy, on the rudimentary level that's enough to tame major problem spots, and can be relatively inexpensive. Start with the Auralex "Roominator" kits, but be sure that you look into some of the corner-fit bass trap solutions.

What's your budget?

On a tight budget I would put the Equator D5 or D8 at the top of the list.

At slightly more, I would look at the AE22.

At around the £1k mark, I would look at the Neumann KH120A.

At around the £2k mark are the ME-Geithain RL906 (which I use).

The Equator D5 & D8 and the Geithain RL906 are co-axial monitors that give an excellent stereo image and depth.

I hope this helps.

John,

Your recommendations certainly help. I really appreciate it. My next move is to go listen to some of your guys' recommendations live to see what I prefer. After that, I may try to find a used version of the speakers for a lower cost option as I would like the quality of the product but not the full price and I'm willing to trust in a brand that makes good (or has other companies make) quality parts.
