Forum Post Ratings???

You must have a post rating of at least 50 to rate other posts.

Exactly how does this get off the ground if nobody can post a rating because nobody has 50 "points" because nobody can post a rating?

I think the concept is great, but I don't see how it bootstraps itself to get started?

it's been running with a small group of test people for a couple of months, just to watch and see how people use it, etc...

Will expand the group in the next few weeks probably.

I think if it's something left to the mods to do, it could be quite effective. There are plenty of threads that go 5-10 pages and veer off-topic easily, but a mod could "thumbs up" what they feel is the best answer, and then anyone else who stumbles across that thread days/weeks/months/years later could fast-forward to that specific reply. Kind of like how Adobe does on it's forums, where you can make a post and then tag a reply as the "correct answer." I could think of a few examples in the last week or so where M. Gilden could have done this in the Canon APS-C forum.

That way, you may be providing answers and solving problems that deter people from posting all new threads on the same topic.

As for anyone and everyone being able to "thumbs up" and "thumbs down," well...see YouTube.

Post rating is worst ever thing to happened to internet discussions.
I know! It happened on another forum and it finally ended up in a "Grand-Rep-Spam-Festival". Then that function has been turned off by the admins.

I could see that, but here it's at least a little more personal. Especially if it tagged names to who was thumbing up/down posts. Also, maybe if there was a minimum post number before allowing someone to thumb it. Something low like 200. That would eliminate people joining just to do that.

Just mark me "EPIC" now OK....

On the other hand I bit like thread rating, but I found out that I mostly don't pay more attention or even choose thread by its rating. I'm in 99.999% catched by the title of a thread than by anything else. So although any rating looked very promising at the begging I just realize there is almost no benefit for me.

I can see a lot of room for misuse. The whole rating of 50 is at least an attempt to keep the ratings from just being wanky. Having admin need to do each one sounds like a lot of work to dump on their shoulders. I know they get paid huge sums to moderate but...

However I can see a system where who ever started the thread gets to tag the responses that helped them or were the "right" answer. Moderators should be able to tag good posts but I don't think they are going to want to be THE tagger of posts.

In the long run I don't see it making a huge difference other than keeping down on the "good post" posts. There are threads where a post was liked by folks and the next 15 posts are saying good post. If you could just tag it with a thumbs up then maybe you don't need to do the "me too" post.

And on some forums I have used the ratings as a gauge of what people thought of the answer, in cases where I didn't know the answer. That only works if you see the plusses and minuses though.
