Ok, so after quite some time debating with myself on what box to get, I finally went with the Formatt FM600. I totally spaced and forgot to order the 72mm step down ring, so as of now, I have only been able to balance it on the focus ring of my DVX, but here's my thoughts so far:
Construction:
Its pretty solid, although the main shade is some sort of ABS or something. The mounting gear/filter treys and all the other hardware (including the flag) is aluminum. With the 72mm step down ring (supposidly), it fits right onto the DVX bayonett mount, and doesnt need rails (just like indie snap). I am not worried at all that it will be too heavy, since the thing is all ABS or aluminum.
Functionality:
So far, it seems to be killing a ton more light then the stock hood (I'd hope so, its about 450 dolla more
) even without the flag, and, concidering that I usually shoot in 16:9 or 2:39.1 without a wide angle lens, I can drop the flag down pretty low for even more flare/light pwnage (yes I just used the phrase pwnage). The great thing is how easy the flag is to adjust/remove, and its range of rotation is plenty enough for almost any lens you'll ever use.
I have yet to use the filter holder, mainly because I am poor and can not afford good square filters.
Complaints:
No side flag attachments. This is my main gripe about it, as I always find myself shooting in situations where I need more light pwnage on the sides (and sometimes bottom) of my image. I'd be stoked if it had attachments but didnt include side flags (like some Petroff boxes). Girpe number two is the lack of rodmounts. Dont get me wrong, I am stoked that I dont have to buy a rod set, but, when I decide to add a follow focus, I'd like to be able to stick the mattebox on it as well. However, I noticed someone ghetto rigged it to accept standard rods.
So, all in all, I am stoked as poo to finally be able to kiss obnoxious flares good ****ing bye. When I finally get the adapter ring (should be tuesday or wednesday), I'll post some examples and tests, showing how well it works, as well as some new fooage I've been shooting lately.
Later,
Dory
