What format do cable TV stations usually require? Do they except mini DV ?

Re: Format for cable television

Beta SP is more the standard. You should talk to some of them, though, it varies.

Re: Format for cable television

They use BetaSP here in my local area but I learned that they encode the BetaSP master to MPEG2 1/2 D1 res for broadcast so I encode to their specs at home and upload the files to their FTP or deliver to them on disc.

Re: Format for cable television

What is 1/2 D1 res?? sorry for the dumb question but thats a new one to me.... ::)

Re: Format for cable television

A local cable rep. told me, I had the option of putting my stuff on BetaSP, SVHS or DVD! I was shocked when she said DVD! This is for a 30 minute show though. She just told me to bring the dvd to their location before hand to make sure it will play in their machines. I have not gone ahead with this just yet. Still working on some things.

Re: Format for cable television

Yeah this is an issue that I deal with here too..I mean our Cable company has eben accepting Beta SP for a long time now but the only other solution is either DVCpro or three and a quarter which is ancient. I wish they could just telll us how they encode the commercials so we could do like donbarzini does...That would save soo much time and money. Or even if we could put them on a CD after we had converted it or somthing...Its funny because all the production houses around here tha shoot Comcast Commercial all use a Mini DV tape. now dont u think thats what they would accept and make it easier? I guess not...Oh well...

Re: Format for cable television

It is nice being able to encode rather than mastering to BetaSP. Right now I have to use TMPGEnc on my PC which is networked to my Mac in order to encode. I have not yet found an encoding solution on the Mac that enables me to encode to the cable company's specs.

Re: Format for cable television

If I called them, Who would I be asking for? Someone in editing or maybe a production manager?
I don't want to come off as a complete idiot. Maybe just a plain old idiot for a first impression would be better. ;D

Re: Format for cable television

Ask for the manager and he/she should be able to put you in the right direction.

Re: Format for cable television

Compressor does not allow or at least it didn't allow me to crop DV to MPEG2 6.0 CBR at 352x480, I have not tried since 1.2 was introduced though.

Re: Format for cable television

ive done some work through RSN and other resort television companies, and they have always accepted mini-dv as a standard, even dvd file discs with uncompressed file footage..but clearly their running their **** off computers so i dunno...i dont touch a tape other then mini-dv

Re: Format for cable television

My local Comcast rep told me to submit on DVD or Beta SP with no tone, no bars, and 10 sec leader.
