"FORMAT ERR!" when P2 card inserted... in top slot only!

I recently was using my HVX and when I booted it up, it said "FORMAT ERR!" Of course, this scared the crap out of me.

I was thinking it was a, well, formatting issue, so I went to the operations menu option and then tried to format it, but it didn't even show up!

Then, when I took it out and put it into the bottom slot, it worked fine! I could shoot and review shots. Any time I switch between, the same thing happens—top slot: FORMAT ERR!; bottom slot: totally fine.

Any thoughts as to what this could be?

can you put a fresh formatted card in the top slot and record to it, or is the top slot completely dead? bent pin? broke camera?

haven't heard of this one, I would be curious what the diagnosis is.

I am in the same boat with my 16 GB card in my HVX170.

P2 Format ERR!

I cannot format it in either slot.

I have only used it a couple of times and only formatted it in the camera.

I shot yesterday, offloaded with my laptop.

I am on location with a shoot and have no way of replacing this.

I fear this will affect my 64 GB card next and I am dead.

i got this problem last summer with my 200A in the middle of a two weeks shooting and, finally, it's was a problem with an electronic board inside the camera not with the cards....sent it for repair....came back perfect...still use the same 16GB cards :)

I'm really terrified my other card is going to go down.

After shooting yesterday,

I took the card out of the camera
write protected it
stuck it into Duel Adapter
offloaded the media
ejected the card
un-write protected it
stuck the card back in the camera

today, I turned the camera on & saw "P2 Format ERR!"

I just had an exasperating 45 min. on the phone trying to get tech support from Panasonic.

They said they had never heard of this problem (never like it when someone tells me that as it is obviously a known issue by googling this)

They gave me another number to call but I don't have time to do it.

They hinted it might be a Mac OS issue that killed the card which I don't understand how that would happen. They also thought it might be a failed P2 card.

I have only used this card about 4-5 times and it is the one that came with my 170..

I'm not taking my other P2 card out of the camera at this point and will offload via firewire.

If anyone has any recommend how I might format it, I will be willing to try...

Hi,

Send me a PM. I actually think it may be something in your camera and not the card, especially if this is now happening to a second card. You are in LA right?

Send me your details in the PM.

Best,

Jan

Pm sent. Email sent. PleAse let me know if this issue affects both slots and if I should stop shooting immediately. I don't have a backup camera at my location.

Hi,

Let me look at the card that won't mount. That should tell me everything.

I sent instructions for you to send it to me via email.

Best,

Jan
