For me, HVX vs. The any DSLR

Hello, I am selling my DVX to finally upgrade to HD, I have a tight budget of 1900$, I am basically looking at the 60d, or gh2 in terms of DSLR, and in terms of regular video cameras per say, is the HVX, i have found the HVX used on here for 1700-1900$ sometimes, and the prices are only going down. I mainly film action sports, such as, Freeskiing, Snowboarding, Skateboarding, and Rollerblading, I also shoot some interviews. I'm honestly scared of going with the DSLR route, because i know it will cost me more in the long run, and ive heard of aliasing, rolling shutter due to cmos sensors which is a big factor in action sports shooting, and Power zoom which is probably one of the most important aspects for me. Also the price of P2 scares me. I'm basically just asking advice from experienced people that have either been in this situation or know of it, or can help me out. Also I didn't know where to post this, so i posted it here.
Thanks,
Aaron Kofsky

If I were in your position I would be looking for a used HMC 150...
CCD, HD, cheap SD cards...
A DSLR would be wrong for what you do...and as I see from your post...you already know it...

Yeah, for the run-gun stuff it sounds like you're doing, the hmc 150 would be perfect. Same sensor as the hvx200 I believe

for an example of what that sensor can do in your case, here's the trailer for a film in which was all shot on the hvx200. (the extreme slomo was highspeed s16 film) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZlNQ8VD65o&hd=1

Yes, I was looking at the HMC150, because it records to SD cards, and apparently its basically just an HD DVX, which then I would know how to use very well right out of the box, but, I've been reading that the HMC150 doesn't have 4:2:2 color space(don't know if this would be a big deal) and it doesn't have variable frame rates, which over cranking and under cranking would come fairly useful in some situations, also the used price of the HVX is a fair bit less expensive. But, those are just my concerns, not sure really though.

I wasn't aware the hmc-150 didn't have variable framerates. (not extremely familiar with panasonics line-up). I guess I'd say try out an hvx, if you can find a deal with a decent amount of p2 storage included their shouldn't be a problem. Unless someone else can think of one and chime in. But I think an hvx would fit the bill quite nicely, if you find a good deal. Variable framerates can be great for sports type stuff.

wow, is that how much the market has gone down? I think I need to sell my ex1r sooner rather than later :crybaby:

if you dont KNOW whether the lack of 4:2:2 is going to be a big deal. its probably wont be. it matters, but if youre in a position where you dont have budget for P2 cards. you probably also dont NEED to worry about the lack of 4:2:2. i say get what works. make some money and worry about that stuff later.

and i also wouldnt worry about variable frame rates. there is software (search twixtor) that will do the same kinda thing in post.

as you describe your needs, a DSLR as your only camera is a BAD idea. i say either get an hmc150 or save your money a little longer until you can get an hpx170 and a couple 16 gig cards
