GH2 For Color Grading: Hacked GH2 or Canon DSLRs...?

I'm having trouble understanding the purpose of this debate... it's been going on forever (not just in this thread, but in countless threads across numerous forums). Everyone wants to feel warm and fuzzy inside because they have the "best" camera.

Truth be told, it's just a tool, the result of which can be pushed quite far in post regardless of rather it's a 5D or GH2 hacked. I've CC'd all types of footage (RED, GH2 (hacked), 5D, 7D, film, etc.) and it's really all about your skill as a colorist. I've made piss-poor 5D/7d footage look better than RED simply because I'm a better colorist than the next guy (true story), whereas someone else can make P2 look better than my GH2 because he/she is a better colorist than me (hasn't happened yet, but it could). What I'm trying to say is that it's the skill behind the camera and in the colorist seat that makes a great image, not necessarily the camera.

And just to put it out there, Magic Bullet Looks is a fun tool, but is by no means a color correction suite. Not being condescending, just truthful.

IMO, we're keeping skill of colour correcting the same and having the dependent variable only be the camera… I think that's the point of this debate: What's the absolute best tool before getting it into the hands of a colourist

I don't think it has anything to do with the best camera. OP asked a pretty valid question that I'd consider when purchasing or deciding on a camera. If you asked which grades better, GH2 Hack or RED footage, that's an invalid question? Valid because it has an obvious/easy answer?

These scenarios are always an "all things equal" case. We're assuming the best colorist. And the best colorist will always get better results out of RED versus 5D.

MBL and Colorista are two different things, of course. But, right, it isn't a serious or proper tool for finishing. Like I said, I'll go to the theater and bring back the results.

We know a person can color grade better than another... but here we want to test the same images taken with 2 different camera, push it as far as we can and see the result... Cameras have different codec, compression, picture profiles... I think its an interesting test to make... People do color grading tests all the time just using different picture profile on the same camera...

I never use looks except for little short-form projects where speed is of the essence.

However, I would argue that Colorista II, while no DaVinci or other high-end suites, is good for the vast majority of the work I do.

Been way too busy to do this. Can barely find tine to write. =[ haven't forgotten but by the time I get to it something new will be out haha
