For all you newbies here

I am not sure if this is legitimate to post here or not but here goes

I am going to send an advice to people who are new here that there is nothing wrong with doing research on your seller but please make sure that you don't make promises that you can't keep.

I recently came across a new member who committed 4 times in buying my xh a1. There is nothing wrong with the camera but he just couldn't make up his mind. Granted, I shouldn't have given him four chances but when someone gives you his word, you want to make sure it's honored.

So newbies, please if you committ, committ 100% otherwise quit wasting ur time and sellers

As for sellers, sell to the one that you know is going to get especially those who have history of purchasing and selling here. This is nothing against newbies but I am just speaking from my own experience and making a suggestion that's better for everyone.

And to add to it, I think you should reach a # of posts before you can purchase and sell. I have seen that on many other forums. It avoids frauds and as well as these kind of situations

My two additional cents

The downside to this is that people can easily just spam or overpost in the forums then just to raise their count. Sometimes a lot of the new people just post one or two word replies to bump it up.

In theory it would work, but how could you monitor it? (just to be devil's advocate)

Perhaps post count could be coupled with a specified length of time as a registered member before being able to list in the Marketplace?

This is exactly what they do.

Bottom line is, don't put yourself in a "promising" situation.

Jawad,
You bring up an excellent point. The prospective buyer may have committed four times but that's a lesson learned. I've dealt with flakey buyers for years and learned not to take it to heart. If they say they can buy it then you tell them OK, show me the money. If they don't pay up when promised and you have another buyer lined up, you tell the prospect "hey pal, I have another buyer, either throw down a deposit to hold the item or miss out on the sale. If you don't have the money in the bag by noon tomorrow I'm selling to the other guy!"

Otherwise you come off as overly desperate to sell.

Try not to put yourself in a position to become frustrated. Label all potential buyers as shoppers and nothing else until they pay up.

It really is that simple. Post count and duration as a member of the forums won't do much.

As I suggested, when I first joined this forum and made my first purchase, I stated there should be a dedicated feedback classifieds/marketplace thread. Has a feedback thread been created and stickied yet?

I feel your pain, but learned from it. Hopefully a legit buyer comes your way soon.

What are the red flags for a seller?

The buyer being a newbie is one. But what are others?

Am I safe if I get cash in hand before I send the item out? Or can even that come back to bite me?

As a seller, how do I protect myself from being scammed? Other than the obvious, which is selling only to longtime members here. (Even that is no guarantee, I suppose.)

I am not taking it personally. I have bought and sold so many things here and lot of people have the courtesy to say yes or no and I am like that too.

I don't want to name him (I wish I could) but we talked on phone twice. He said he wants it and requested I check shipping price so I did. Then he tells me other people are selling it few hundred bucks cheap. So I said fine, go ahead and he simply said no its ok I will go with you. Then next day he wanted to be assured if its in good condition (which I understand). I told him even then that you can go ahead and get someone else. Then he tells me u have my word its a done deal. I just want to pay you next week due to taxing purposes it being new year. That's where I made a fault and gave him that luxury.

I think what I trying to suggest to everyone is look out for urself. Sell what you think is best price.

paypal is best option

call the guy, get his # speak to him. if he is legit he will spend time with you. i have had lot of sellers spend good 30 minutes on skype or ichat with me showing the product. not saying others are not legit but it helps

References are the best way to know who you are dealing with. SOme say PayPal, well I use paypal but I use it grudgingly and find it a bit offensive that some sellers insist on not only using PayPal but also charging the buyer for using it, adding to the cost. I bought with it on EBAY and got a defective piece of gear from a seller and it took 10 months to recover the funds after returning the gear and PayPal did nothing to help. I did it by not giving up and continuing to push the seller to refund my money.
I have bought a lot of gear on here and sold some too and always dealt with honest people and dealt with people honestly. This forum and DVInfo are both solid and the members are quick to take care of each other and this discourages the crooks for the most part. The Mods don't put up with BS and have been known to track down the bad guys. But common sense and references still are the best way and if you don't feel good about it ....don't.
My 2 cents...

PayPal is no guarantee, I'm afraid. The person can pay using PayPal, then claim they never got the item, or that it was defective, or even that someone else used their PayPal without permission. They can say they shipped it back, but only ship an empty box. Also, some people say that PayPal won't authorize them for a purchase over a certain amount, so they must pay some other way. Which could be true, but I have no way of knowing.

And how do I get references, especially from a newbie? They'll only give me the references they want me to contact. If I'm being scammed, then they'll give me references who are friends or accomplices. A seller can tell me they have a great rating on Ebay, but I have no way to verify if the Ebay user ID they give me even belongs to them.

I said this before. And the thing is that i usually dont post on other threads. But i do make some business here. ive purchase expensive stuff. So i think all the sellers/buyers should have a record. something like a little post about them self so the clients could add some info about their experience with this guy and stuff. Im positive about mine. Ive never had problems with somebody on here so i think thats a good idea.

Exactly.

Some forums that have a buy/sell area also have a feedback area to post well, feedback on the seller or buyer.

Dont believe this place has one.

Not necessarily so. I have bought two items from forum members and in both cases I have left feedback on this buy/sell forum. So you can leave a history of the sale.
