For 4K?: SanDisk 64GB Extreme Pro 95MB/s Class 10 UHS-I SDXC U3 Memory Card

Hi
Just curious: Will the SanDisk 64GB Extreme Pro 95MB/s Class 10 UHS-I SDXC U3 Memory Card work for 4K with the GH4? The rec format says 100m/p/s. A search on the internet seems to indicate they do, but with what camera, I ask myself.

If not, what's the recommendation? For about 2x the money there's the SanDisk 64gb Extreme Pro Compact Flash Memory Card (160MB/s). If I have to I will.

I've been using the same 32GB Extreme Pro 95MB/s Class 10 UHS-I cards I use in my GH3's for the few 4K things I've done and they seem to be working with no problems so far.

We don't have Compact Flash slots in our GH4's so that CF card won't fit. CF cards are quite a bit larger than SD, SDHC, and SDXC media that fit in m4/3 gear.

Hi Bif,

Thanks for the reply. Good to know. I've been learning a few things.

Another is: I've been shamefully operating under the ignorant presumption that MB/s and m/b/s were the same thing. Au contraire. Someone enlightened me w/o too many guffaws. Or any, actually.

And meba-bits being 1/8 of a MB, then 100 mega-bits per second is 12.5 MB/s, even 200 is only 25 MB/s. So my 45MB/s cards, U1, used with the GH2 theoretically should work. What I need to discover is what the guaranteed minimum speed is. As one fellow said, "Well again, the biggest thing to remember is the minimum guaranteed speed. Other cards may be able to hit higher maximum speeds, but a U3 card guarantees 30MB/s." And that speed would cover, is guaranteed to cover, all eventualities with the GH4.

Other posters claimed to do alright with U1 not U3 cards, some even happy with Transcend cards which I've heard not such nice things about.

I'll go with the SanDisk U3s. Compared to what I thot I'd need, the compact flash, I'll actually be making money on this deal. ;)

Thanks again!

yur bud,

I only now wonder what capacity I need for, say, an hour interview in 4K.

Anyone any idea?

O, and as a spare, nothing but the Panasonic, not knock-off worth considering?

IMO no "bargain brand" media should even be considered, even Transcend which is about the best of the "bargain brands" is something I feel I won't trust. The Panasonic media should be OK.

Look at it this way.

We spent $1700 on the camera body alone...

...What sense does it make to try to save a few on the media?

Thanks, guys, for your replies.

@Bif—As usual—maybe even always in my experience—you are correct, sir. B&H gets my business when they open Tuesday. 2 Cards, 1 Panasonic battery, probably one of those straps that unclicks easily...hmm...anything else to suggest, Bif?

Sounds small, but I'm surprised there's no little plastic cover for the battery like the batteries for the GH2 had. Might ask about that too.

@Osslund—Good to hear. I'll give it a test shortly. Doing many things, must wait for a break to begin the beginning. ;)

Btw, anyone want to tell me the differences worth knowing between the UHD and DCI choices? I think to some degree the file size each produces denotes something about quality, no?

Thanks for the reply.

Oddly, I don't seem to have that option in Record Quality. I wonder if that's because in System Frequency I chose NTSC, not Cinema—Just guessing.

You only have UHD in 25 and 30 fps and DCI 4K only in 24fps with the GH4.
The Sandisk extreme pro 95Mb/s (UHS-I U3) works great to record RAW footag on the Blackmagic Pocket. 90mb/s peak write.
There are U1 and U3 versions of this card. The U3 (no golden top) guarantees 30MB/s minimum write rate.

Sandisk does have a new UHS-II U3 version of the Extreme Pro card (280MB/s peak read)
