Hey guys...Been checking out this site for a while, but have never registered. I figured I'd finally take the time to sign up since I have a major problem....

I have some wedding footage that's pretty much cut already, however, there's one major problem. The lights in the background are flickering real bad. I noticed that it tends to flicker whenever there's camera movement. I searched for this topic and couldn't find any replies as to how to fix it. Anyone have suggestions? I'm on a deadline and need to have this done asap. Thanks and hope to hear from anyone.....

My first guess is that your shutter speed is interfering with frequency of light.
If you are in US, most interior lights are working on 60Hz power source, so they are acctualy pulsing 60times/sec (simplified). In Europe, it is 50Hz.
So if you shoot under most interior lights and use faster shutter speeds (ex. 120, 250, 500 etc) you will get the annoying flickering effect.
This does not apply to natural light source and proffesional lighting equipment (most pro lights use "ballasts" to increase the frequency).

Sorry to say, If this is the problem you are experiencing, I do not believe that you can fix it in post but if someone knows of any software or plug ins that can remove this kind of flicker, please post.

All the best

There's a plugin for Virtual Dub that can remove flickering called MSU Deflicker. I've tried it out a couple of times and it seems to be pretty good.

Virtual Dub Download [I recommend the stable versions, you can go for 64bit if your computer supports it]

Hey Kin....So in this case, how would I go about applying it? I have footage in FCP that is cut already. I really can't afford to re-capture everything. I've never really worked in virtual dub before primarily due to the fact that I own a mac. My brother has a PC, so I'd be willing to give this a shot though because it's down to desparation.

I normally take the flickering footage and run it through Virtual Dub, then I bring the filtered file back into the timeline. Yes, it does get a bit tedious sometimes. :embarasse

If you need any help on running Virtual Dub, I'd be glad to help out.

Hey Kino..thanks so far...So I have all my clips in FCP. What format will virtual accept? I've tried exporting my clips into MOVs and an mpeg2, but no luck. Keep in mind that I'm trying to keep the same quality at no expense...

I use a lossless codec called Huffyuv, but uncompressed AVIs will work too. Just be aware that the file sizes will pile up pretty quick! I'd trim out parts that don't need to be filtered to save processing time and harddrive space. Becareful when you're applying the filter for video that has fades/fast cuts, sometimes it changes your contrast/brihgtness on accident. Playing around with the settings a little bit will solve this though.

Good luck!
