Footage is Jumpy/Jerky

So today I finally started testing the camera. Using the kit lens, shutter speed either 50 or 60. I tried panning and slight movements both on a tripod and handheld. Oh, and C settings.

Each clip that I looked at looked extremely jumpy and jerky, especially in a few parts of the clip. It would look like regular 24p "strobing" and all of a sudden for a second or two it would start getting very jerky, almost as if it were buffering slowly.

I'm not doing whip pans or anything, and it's not regular 24p strobing. At intervals within the clip, the jumpiness gets much worse, and I have no idea why it's doing this.

I'm using FCP, and using the JES method of pulldown. Can anyone help me out? I'm sorry I couldn't upload an example, but the 30 second clip I wanted to show is past the 500mb Vimeo limit.

The video also looks fine in the editor (obviously the quality sucks here), but once I try to watch it in Quicktime or something, it looks like sh*t.

I also think it may be Quicktime player. Every time I watch the clip, it seems like it jumps at different times. I seriously have no idea what the hell is up with this. I'm trying to upload a 720p version of the clip right now.

My quicktime player is up to date, and I don't see why it wouldn't be able to handle this :P

I heard of bad things about Quicktime X if that's what you're using. I would go back to the older versions. That's what Philip Bloom uses too. If your computer can handle it, try using VLC player. I have a Macbook Pro i5 and even 60i footage looks awesome albeit with interlacing. But it's perfect once I do pulldown.

Why not use Compressor to remove pulldown? It's simple.

I've had nothing but issues with Quicktime ever since my Canon 5d2 days.

It's probably not much help to a Mac user, but the new Edius 5.5 handles native AVCHD files very smoothly on the timeline.

I tried using Cinema Tools, and that was pretty easy, but it ended up looking just as bad.
VLC says it won't play "apch" format.

My Quicktime Version is 7.6.6

Just looked at the clip in Cinema tools, and it looks good. Played it again, and it started "lagging" again. I'm totally lost. At least it's not my camera, but I don't know what to do. And I uploaded a clip to Vimeo (it said the file had been uploaded), and now that I went to check it, it's not even there. Apparently, it didn't upload, and now it estimates 4 hours and 56 mins. to upload a 150mb file.

I'm just having a real sh*t day. Ugh.

Well the thing is, I'm not having trouble with the exported files, but all the files. None of them play smoothly, not even if I bring it down to 720p :(

my guess is its the software playing if it looks fine in your editing program. it would look terrible if i played on QT and VLC with original files.

I would say software issue too. I had some issues with frame rate stuff with CS4 that made some strobing but that was something else.

Take a short video demonstrating the issue, upload the original MTS and someone here (and/or myself) can download it to play on our machine, then we can report if we have the issue. Sounds like it will probably be specific to your machine but you never know.

maybe its a bus speed issue? are you watching from the card? USB is soften too slow.....
and the question "how does it look inside the camera?" is also good.

In camera it doesn't suffer from that issue. I'm not playing it from the card on my comp, I already imported in FCP and changed the clips to 24p. And I didn't check 24PN in the hack, so yes, it does need pulldown.

@Mr Fanny, so your original files look bad as well?

How can I shorten and upload my original files? I captured in FCP and then used JES to remove pulldown. Is the end result what I should upload? Or do you guys want it before the pulldown was removed? Also, how can I shorten those original files? I have only like 300mb left for vimeo this week, and the 30 second clip is like 1 gig.

Sorry I don't know much about this, but I've never worked a tapeless camera.

None of my files even show up as mts files. Once I captured them into FCP, they are shown as MOV files. Is this ok? :-/

So today I finally started testing the camera. Using the kit lens, shutter speed either 50 or 60. I tried panning and slight movements both on a tripod and handheld. Oh, and C settings.

You later indicted that you did not enable the no-pulldown option. Would it be possible for you to reflash the hack with the 'no-pulldown' option for 24p enabled.

Given all the glowing reports of the hack, I don't recall anyone indicating they were still using the pulldown format.

I've been waffling on flashing my camera with the hack. So, I can't really 'test' things at this point...

That's what I thought I would try later, but since it seems to be more of a software issue, I figured I'd hold off on doing that. But I do plan to later. Those who have used 24PN, does it look better than the pulldown method?
