Youtube should automatically generate the SDR versions if the upload is HDR. When you provide a custom LUT it will use that otherwise it does a default tone mapping. Perhaps there is an issue with the custom LUT if a custom LUT was used.
 
Panasonic should skip YouTube, this film isn't horrifically graded, it's the stupid HDR upload. Look at it on Vimeo, it looks great. https://vimeo.com/356186744
YouTube is so bad for this type of stuff, there is no SDR version coming up and the HDR versions of all of the content looks awful on YouTube. Color and contrast look good.

I'm watching Alive in 4K on Vimeo though and there are some funky DOF/focus issues, not sure if this is an effect of an anamorphic adapter or post or if her AC just really missed focus at :17, 1:41. These are focus or optics issues,
not the S1H obviously but I am surprised that she didn't reshoot or use other shots that were more in focus. There is soft, then there is mush and these two shots are mush.

The DP Review (a former "TCS Jordan") mentioned a pretty bad rolling shutter at 6K, which makes it less suitable for a dance video. I thought that the bar footage, where there was little motion, was outstanding. Colors were just great. But then they went with the constantly moving subject and a constantly moving camera on top of funky lighting, which made me long for the "Trick Shot".

Yeah, I often watch in 1080p but I switched to 4K on my 4K screen just to double check focus, and lots of soft shots in there. Plus they didn't light anything and the story is non-existent (I got the story more through reading the plot summary on the Vimeo desription than by watching the movie), though I'm sure they thought a girl dancing has some deep story to it. Blech. Maybe I just don't get dance videos, but I find them pretentious and lacking in storytelling abilities.

Sure you can get cool shots in some (though I wasn't impressed by the shots in this one), but it's like those other camera test videos mentioned in another topic where someone takes their girlfriend out on the town, films pretty shots with her, puts melancholy music to it, and calls it a "film." Nah, it's just a meaningless test video with pretty shots. Learn how to write a script with acts, character development, conflict, resolution, and then call that a film. "Alive" is not a short film, it's a dance video.

Panasonic did some good ones for their EVA-1 launch.

Still a dumb meaningless dance video, but at least the shots looked good, the DP new that lights exist and used them (even if some shots look overlit), the locations were really cool (not an unlit laundromat or bar), the costuming had unique colors, the shots in focus, and overall just well shot.


And oh, hey, look, actual short films that aren't dumb dance videos calling themselves short films.

I've been DP on a few dance films, won a few dance film festivals but for the most part I agree. One I shot a long time ago was an interpretation of the story of Salome, it actually had a lot of story in it, some dialog for exposition and we had an amazing dancer from Spain who played her. I had clashes with the director because he couldn't comprehend the difference between lighting a scene and bring the levels down in post so you end up with a well exposed signal versus just underexposing the image to impart "darkness". The scenes he let me expose correctly then had the editor bring down in post looked great but a few other scenes he basically pressured me into underexposing as we were shooting, even though I was warning him the whole time, he took those levels down even more in post and they looked like blurry mud. But the story was an actual narrative story, with several characters, jumps in time, location, shooting in a hospital, etc. The story wasn't bad but his inexperience left me kind of frustrated because he didn't trust me to give him what the project needed and in the end, it was not a successful project, although the story wasn't bad, kind of interesting, which was the only reason I signed on to shoot it.

Another I shot was a sort of an Asian supernatural thing we shot out in the Alabama Hills (popular filming spot a few hours north of Los Angeles at the base of the Sierras), had four dancers from China with some very cool movement, costumes with LEDs, it looked pretty interesting but yeah, the "story" seemed to be only in the director's head and not on the screen. She explained it to me and I couldn't comprehend what she was trying to communicate, other than it was cool looking.

For nice visuals and movement, I really like shooting dance but I kind of agree with you, most dance films, if you watch a dance film festival, are just music videos with dance.
Perhaps films like Black Swan or the Red Shoes work because they are psychological thrillers with a lot of dance thrown in, rather than a lot of dancing with a story thrown in?
 
What’s nice is the S1 is already out in the wild - we don’t really need the footage to tell us how this will perform other than a couple metrics. More codec options and what not... the two big things are dual iso for even better lowlight, and the aliasing filter which should give the image a slightly... softer look?

Ive been happy with everything shot on my S1 - all has looked great.
