Footage from dvd?

An actress friend of mine needs a quick reel and I offered to throw one together for her. The problem is I have no idea how to go about taking dvd video and importing it into Avid. Is there an easy way to do this?

I am not sure, if it totally works that way, but take the vob files from your DVD and rename them to mpeg files, the import them, if avid cant do that use something different and render it out with Dv codec

Hook up a DVD player to your system using componet or S-Video. Open the digitize tool. Hit the record button. Hit the play button on the DVD. Stop recording when the ladies video is over. Start editing.

A lot of people might suggest getting a DVD ripper, etc. But there's very little difference (if any) between a DVD file that was ripped and one that was played out. Ripping isn't worth the trouble IMO.

If you don't digitize staright from the DVD (like milksac mentioned), take a look at MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5.....

http://www.squared5.com/

They've got downloads for Mac & Windows. And - it's free. And - it works great. You simply drag the VOB files to the app and choose what format you want the video in. You can even set in's & out's for scene extraction.

I've had similar situations with people updating reels or merely wanting to put something on their website. I've tried a bunch of other options and Streamclip is great.

Thanks, worked like a charm!

Very cool. Glad it worked out. As luck would have it, I ended up having to do the same thing earlier tonight. I'd forgotten what a cool program that is.

And, no, I don't work for Squared 5.

It even fixed timecode breaks I had on the {older} DVD. Later....
