Wrong unfortunatly, but interesting....[/quote]

Um, If I'm not mistaken, the quality of the focus won't change because of the use of a follow focus. All the follow focus does is turn the focus ring on the DVX for you. I'm sure it has a great tactile feel to it, and is more easily repeatable than just turning the lens with your hand, but a properly executed focus pull will look the same with or without the follow focus unit.

Re: Follow Focus question...

By your assumptions, a tripod is also "unnessicary", since you can always lean up against something....

Possible, perhaps....
Easier, no....
Practical, no....
Cheap, yes....

Your arguments against follow focus appear to be based on cost, as opposed to function.

Unfortunatly, you need to actually use a follow focus before you're able to understand and judge it's usefullness.

Explainations of the use of a FF, considering your preconceived assumptions, are pointless.

To anyone else who may be interested, look into a FF, you'll be quite impressed.

Re: Follow Focus question...

...beyond your assumption that ive never used a follow focus, the idea that i'm implying that a follow focus on the DVX is the equivilent usefullness of a tripod is just off base.  we are talking about a specific operation of the camera: focus.  is a follow focus neccessary to perform good rack focus or focus pulls: NO, not at all ...is it nice to have: Yes.

is a tripod or other stabilizing or steady mount device usually necessary to get solid stable and unshakey shots including pans and tilts: Yes. is it nice to have : Yes.

nobody is arguing the usefullness or advantage of a follow focus here. we are simply commenting that it clearly in the "would be nice to have" catagory, and not the "necessity" catagory. i find it hard pressed to belive that any one of the multitude of people out there puling focus and rack shots right and left in their work without one would say any differently. in this specific case, i certainly wouldnt advise someone to "break the bank" on a luxury item such as this when there are other much more needed accessories that need to be purchased.

Re: Follow Focus question...

Pookie, your attitude screams "give me attention!!!"

You have to remember that some of us here, even though we own a DVX might have used many many other much more expensive cameras...and for YOU to assume that we haven't used a piece of equipment...shows a lot.

I think Iamloser was right to call this a Luxary...this is the same for a fluid head tripod and a standard tripod. Do you NEED a fluid head? No, is it nice to have for smoother pans and tilts...yes.

Re: Follow Focus question...

Ok, so I finally got around to testing it and YOU CAN output the Focus number to a monitor.

This will make things so much easier!

ANYone have feedback as to how many Focus units a follow focus would need to have to be use-full in normal production?
