follow focus question, options, etc with the hmc150

Hi! I have an HMC150 and I have a few questions about follow focus. We are going to be working on short narrative films and have pretty much spent our budget already. A follow focus system is probably something we won't be buying, but I am looking to get more information on it.

Here we go!

What systems work with the HMC150?
Which follow focus system(s) do you use?
Is there cheap way to shift focus around with moving actors and a still camera? Any cheap systems that are worth the time, or a DIY way of rigging it up?
Any luck doing this manually?
Any tricks?
It seems like all the systems require buying rails, too, or they come in a bundle. Or with a 35mm adapter. Are there any that don't?

Thanks a bunch, you guys have been incredibly helpful.

Best to check out the 35mm adapters section....
Most of your questions will most likely be answered there, however
the gear is rather expensive although there is used equipment for
sale from time to time.

any follow focus will work with the HMC150... the thing is getting the right lens gear to go around the focus barrel... I've tried to get the Redrock FF to the barrel... but its shaped in a odd way

hey!

so the company indifocus makes a follow focus system for $299. It includes something called a universal friction wheel that allows you to pull focus on the hmc focus ring without having the lens on the camera geared for the follow focus system. I havent tried it but there website seems to look legitimate. Take a look sometime. Also remember although this is a budget solution, it still still requires a rails system to work. Indifocus sells those at a budget price too!

Hope this is of some help.

if you're not using a 35mm adapter you should be fine focuing without a Follow Focus.
I always just focus manually w/ the HVX without a problem.

I'd say the same.. only use the follow focus if you are using an adapter. If you are not and want a controller, the varizoom rockerstyle one works really well. Its the same one for 100b, and HVXs. I use it all the time for talking head confernce stuff where a studio config is preferred. It's a nice purchase and worth the couple of hundred bucks.

Thanks, everyone! I'll look into these solutions.

How do people pull focus normally without a follow focus system? If you have a shallow depth of field and want to pull focus to/from a person or object in the foreground/background, how do you do it?

with the focus ring and it helps to have an LCD monitor. This cam also doesn't have very narrow DOF.. not in film terms anyway.

that's a weird question... do you even have the HMC?

tha answer is, you just turn the focus ring...
