Follow focus question - 50mm f/1.8 AF

I am fairly new to the SLR game. I've had a t2i for a couple of months now and just picked up Canon's 50mm 1.8 lens. I am looking into Jag35's Field Runner setup w/ Jag35's "D-Focus" follow focus unit.

Here is my predicament... After some research I have discovered that Canon's 50mm 1.8 lens does not play well with follow focus due to the shotty (and small) focus ring. I have heard of a few DIY fixes including a well-placed rubber band to give the follow focus a good grip on the focus ring... I would rather not put all of my eggs into that basket...

So I'm considering putting the Canon 50 on ebay and picking up Nikon's 50mm 1.8D (http://www.adorama.com/NK5018AFDU.html) with the proper adapter of course. Does anyone have any experience with follow focus on this particular lens? I figured picking up this lens and adapter would be a lot cheaper than upgrading to Canon's 50mm 1.4 lens. Plus I want the adapter anyway for future glass purchases...

Any and all feedback is appreciated.

The Nikon AF ring is probably going to be real similar to the Canon (I have Nikon) . I would try and find a manual focus Nikon 50mm instead.

The lens you linked to is one of my "always in the bag" lenses for my Nikon's for both still and video. A nice, fast, sharp lens for a really good price.

You may want to look at the same lens on ebay, a decade or so back. Then it was a full metal construction. Probably a bit more durable

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Actually changing rigs to the Cowboystudio shoulder support rig to save a little money and hopefully put it towards another lens. @awbacon I will definitely do some searching for the older gen of that 50mm lens and see what I can come up with - thanks.

The 50mm 1.8 AF works with a follow focus just fine, but for the money you might as well get an m42 50mm 1.4. Or even a Nikkor E series 1.8.
