you get what you pay for...
i looked extensively at the cavision products before choosing the chroziel follow focus and the vocas matte box. cavision is less expensive and less quality. once you handle both, you would never buy cavision products. unless, of course, you wanted to save a few thousand dollars!!
I have to disagree here. I have the Century optics ring and the Cavision FF, and they work very well together. The Cavision FF comes with its own ring which you can attach to the focus collar of the DVX, but I wanted to use my Century Optics ring, unfortunately the gear that comes with the Cavision is not compatable with the Century Optics focus ring. BUT, I was able to find a gear that did fit and just slipped it right on. Now I have a FF with my Century Optics ring and it all works great. I have used a Chrosziel FF, nice piece of kit, but the price, whoa. I can honestly say that for the price the Cavision Follow Focus( which by the way is all aluminium ) is worth buying.
Believe it or not I found the gear in an old RC car that I had. The cost of the Cavision FF is about $799.00 US. As for the rods, the Cavision are industry standard 15mm rods, 60mm center to center, so the chrosziel or any FF that fits those dimensions will work. Again, I know the Chrosziel, its nice, but the Cavision is worth a look. Also the Cavision will accept whips.
The Cavision FF was a nice unit, but *again* the gear/ring they make for the DVX does *not* fit the DVX. I know 'cuz they sent me two to try and neither was large enough to fit around the DVX's focus barrel.
I didn't have a plethora of old RC cars to tear apart and, frankly, I shouldn't have to.
WOW, you must have one of those super secret hush hush DVX cams smuggled out of japan by those notorius camera mules, who carry them up their ass. Hang onto that thing man its probably worth a fortune. Just wipe the **** off it, or leave it, if you like that kinda thing.
You and I have discussed Cavision's FF before. Just 'cuz their gear wouldn't fit my camera doesn't have anything to do with the lower intestines of Asian equine.
If you could have thrown me an extra RC car gear in my time of need, I might have kept the Cavision FF.
But, it's all good...™ Don't forget who laid out the trail of bread crumbs you followed here to DVXuser.com.
Terry, I apoligize, bad day at work, "hmmmmm bread crumbs". The mattebox on my page is one that I built for the 16:9 lens. Wow, just re-read what I wrote, yeah its been a bad day.
Now I've read and reread and read again all these follow focus discussions...I want to get something clear.
Hard limit stops...
Three feet to infinity...
and so on...
But I'm hoping I don't get flamed...but doesn't the focus ring on the camera work the same way? of course with out the hard stops, but I tend not to spin the focus ring around and around... ...Just wonderin'
In a word, yes. A follow focus is just another way of getting a smoother more accurate focus. And it is usually best to use it with the camera on a tripod.
I just added a whip to mine because the cam is not terribly large and the area around the camera mount can get really crowded. The whip lets the puller stand back a few more inches. This become inportant if everyone is hot and *sweaty*
