focussing by zooming in doesn't work !?

Hi!
I had been told that a good way to focus was to zoom in -> focus -> zoom out.

I did that for the documentary I'm making now. I just checked some rushes on a monitor: not sharp!

I checked more scientifically with my DVX connected to a monitor, and I have to conclude: that focussing technique doesn't work with the DVX ?! How come ? Is there a efficient similar technique to work ?? (bc I shoot in progressive, and i find the autofocus is not really trustable)

Thanks a lot !

Since this way of focusing seems to work fine for the rest of the worl, maybe tell us in detail and step by step what you have been doing and what results you got.
Please also list your scene file settings.
Is your DVX new, used or rented?

thanks for your answer
actually even the autofocus changes when I zoom out. And I film a poster on the wall, everything perpendicular. It's 85 when I zoom in; 65 when I zoom out !
Here are my scene settings, but I have the same problem with standard settings...

dt level -2
v det level -2
det coring +2
chroma level -2
chroma phase 0
col temp -2
master ped +2
iris level -2
cinelike d
knee auto
matrix cinelike
skin tone dtl off
v det freq thick
preg 25P

do you have an idea about this problem ?
Thanks a lot!

just for a reality check, is your lense switched to manual focus?
If you are in manual, zooming in to grab focus, zooming back out to reframe and then find you are not in focus, then you may be experiencing the infernal back focus issue that some have mentioned here. Do a search on "back focus" and see if that describes what you are experiencing. If it is, I understand it can be corrected but will most likely cost $omething to get done.

Theoritically, zooming in and setting a focus and zooming back out should give correct focus for wider shot. It always works for me. Maybe it's a technical problem with your DVX.

Yes the camera is set to manual focus of course... and indeed, it seems i'm not the only one with this problem. (i made a research int eh forum with "back focus") I've just read that a factory reset could help... i'll try.
thanks for your answers, although it seems there won't be any miracle... :-S

a factory reset doesn't help. So goodbye focussing by inzooming. But actually, it made me discover the DTL function I had never used... better than nothing...
