Focusing.../

I know this topic has been beaten to death already on here, but I am just looking for a very honest and bold answer.

Are external HD field monitors an ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE for focusing? I understand they are nice to have, and great for shooting commercial style or cinema stuff, but for a run and gun doc style shooting, HOW hard is it to actually get a good crisp focus, and off of the flip or the eye piece?

Thanks and sorry for the overly redundant topic.

Off the eyepiece... Not that difficult but the LCD is really only good for checking composition and overall image... Time spent with the camera greatly increases your ability to nail it and feel confident as to atleast whether you nailed it.. or not.

The distance markers in the OSD are fantastic for measuring distance.
I set mine to feet as I find I can judge focal length very well using this method.
Practice practice practice.
