Focusing to infinity M95, M99

When I focus to infinity, I find the image is sharp at M95, and becomes out of focus if I go to M99. The object isn't too close, I'm focusing to a high grade monitor--the lens just seems to go out of focus above M95.
Could someone please tell me what's going on? Much obliged.

Yeah, that's a pain how that works. Would be great if there was a menu setting asking whether you want infinity at 95 or 99.

Infinity = MF95. Don't go past that. Use the "push to infinity" button and you'll see it leaps to MF95, not MF99.

I'm not really sure why it allows you to focus "past infinity" unless perhaps it's a concession to heat expansion which may cause a bit of focus plane shift? At which point focusing "past infinity" would let you bring it into focus anyway?

You know, if you want aliens in sharp focus, it is always a good idea to focus beyond infinity.

I've been wondering about this myself...

Thanks Barry. Your book is great BTW.

Perhaps its to allow a focus offset for longer wavelength (IR) applications?

IR's filtered out though...

Maybe it's all for marketing.
A: "mine has more pixels."
B: "oh yeah? Well, mine is made by SONY."
C: "oh yeah? Well, mine can focus PAST INFINITY."

A&B: "ooooohhh..."

if you divide by nine. the HVX/DVX Go to MF11.

Panasonic " If you divide by 9..... WE GO TO 11!!!"

on a more serious note, i thought you (barry G) said it was to accomadate macro diopeters and stuff like that?

like to enable lens attachmetns to focus properly.

Not necessarily to accomodate them, per se, but that's an example where you can get valid focus by going past "infinity"; when using a macro adapter the range from 96-99 certainly becomes useful.

If the humidity is high, when you zoom in you do not get a focusd picture: the "infinit" mark means a relative close distance. Doing documentary films in 16mm i used to permit the ring to turn 3 to 5 degree over the mark. With a 8oomm, shooting birds over the sea, it was over 15 degree! I do appreciate the possibility to pass over infinity - with the HVX!. Best regadrs. Colin

Now that's funny.
