Focus problem on DVX100

I bought a 3 yr old DVX100. Great picture but I may have a focus problem. When in manual mode I zoom in and focus on a subject then zoom out to frame my subject the image goes soft. Is this normal for the 100 or do I have a defective camera? This also happens in auto focus but is less pronounced if I back out the zoom very very slowly.

It sounds like you have a back focus problem. You'll have to take it to an authorized repair center for service.

It shouldn't do that, it should hold focus throughout the zoom range.

I sent the camera off for repair. I'll let you know the estimate when I hear back from them. Don't think it will be cheap though!

The estimate is back. $850 for a new head, cleaning, and adjustment. Is it worth doing this for a 4 yr old DVX100 or should I buy a new Cannon XH-A1 and get HDV capability too?

Ok. I bit the bullet and sent it in for repairs. Turnaround was very fast as I have the camera back already. Looks and works like new. Sent it to Specialized Communications,Inc. who I believe is a sponsor here. Great work and fast turnaround.

Just couldn't give up the DVX for a Canon. cheers. I'm offf on another shoot!
