Focus Distance Readout Fault

I find the focussing distance readout to by erratic when switching from auto to manual focus. The image will look in focus but distance shown in the readout will often be way out. It seems to be OK if kept in manual constantly but using auto to assist focus then switching back is a problem and I can't rely on the distance shown. Is this a characteristic of the HMC-151 or a fault?

I noticed the same thing on my 150. As long as the focus is correct, I should be able to disregard the erratic readings in auto, but I haven't taken the time to confirm that. It does however appear the distance is acurate in manual, which is the only time I would be interested in the distance reading.

The problem i switching back from auto to manual. Object say 20ft away will look in focus but switching to manual it says distance is 80ft or similar, I then manually wind it back until the reading says 20ft and somehow it has stayed in focus. Weird and unsettling!
