focus difficulty

I am locked into a mode where my depth of field when I focus is somehow razor thin, regardless of f- stop. It feels like I am fighting auto focus but I think I have that turned off! I don't have a lengthy in and out of focus rack. Somehow, when I get to the focus spot it snaps in but then snaps back out.

I have tried fine and course on a menu settng but that makes no difference.

What am I doing wrong. This wasn't happening before.

Did you RTFM?
Did you read Barry Green's book?

Without having the camera in hand, not sure what you did.
Two things might have happened:
1. the camera is broken and malfunctioned.
2. you have some unusual settings that you put in there manually and may have locked the focus. I approach most problems as if trouble shooting a car, etc. Imagine a trouble shooting chart. Start going through the menu and find our what is happening.

How long has this been happening?

Did you apply any custom settings? When I change camera setting, I either write it down or memorize what I did so that I can get back to where my original settings were. If the camera is not broken, then you must have changed something.

Does it happen in all light conditions?

Did you try turning the camera off and back on?

Set the camera to auto - does it function?

Describe in detail what you were doing prior to the problem - what setting did you change when you were manual focusing? Can you reset things and retest?

Describe the steps you normally take to get into the manual mode and focus the camera -

List all the manual setting you currently have on the camera - especially those in reference to focusing -

I think you should be able to figure out what went wrong. I do not have my camera in front of me and I do not have the menu memorized, or I would try to duplicate what you may have done.

If you are unable to figure it out, maybe someone here has done the same thing and knows what you did. Maybe Barry Green will read this post. I am sure he would have an answer. If not call tech support.
You should be able to figure it out. Hope you get it working. Best off luck.

Check the AUTO/MANU switch on the back of the camera; if it's AUTO then the camera will be in autofocus even if you've turned the manual focus off.

Hi Barry & David

I had this problem pop up yesterday on a shoot and for the life of me i cannot work out whats happened. Ive been using the same camera setup and have not changed any settings other than playing around with the scene files. Switch is definitely on manual but my focus range seems tiny! It's kind of hard to explain but its as if the focus goes from doing nothing to suddenly within 1mm of turn being in focus and then out of focus again even if I'm at lets say F6.

Cannot for the life of me work out what's going on. Hoping Barry might have an idea, I'm sure it's something i have done! but i cannot think of any settings i changed recently that should have affected focus.

Certainly could still be a setting somewhere, but almost sounds to me like a loose lens element. BTW, I'm not a camera tech, but I play one in forums. ;-)

That is why in the trouble shooting post above, I suggested that he test it in auto. If it is a lose lens element, then the auto functions probably would not work. If the focus works in auto, then it is probably a setting.
