GH2 focus assist only works sometimes

When you have a prime lens mounted, and press the "dial" in to zoom in for critical focus.. it seems to have a mind of its own, and only works some of the time.. anyone else had this issue?

It doesn't work when a monitor is attached to the GH-2 ( which can be annoying sometimes ), but should work for all non-electronic lenses when the camera is set to manual focus mode. For electronic lenses ( i.e. Lumix ), set the camera to manual focus mode, and use the focusing ring on the lens to display the focus assist mode.

There we go.. we racked our brains for hours trying to figure out why in the heck it wasn't working.

I think these posts are confusing. First these comments are meant for the GH2.

First you need to be specific if the prime lens you have mounted is a lens with AF (e.g., Panasonic native lens). Then you need to turn the switch by little dial on top-left to MF (some lenses don't even need this changed), and the focus assist happens without pushing the little wheel in the back. Simply turn the lens focus wheel and the LCD/View finder will magnify automatically. However if the switch is set on AFS, instead of AFC, press the shutter button half way, and then turning the focus on the lens jumps to focus assist. I'd bet there are menu settings that change this behavior as well.

If the lens you are mounting is a legacy one without any communications with the camera, then turn the switch by little wheel on top-left to MF. Now pushing the wheel in the back magnifies the LCD/View finder for focus assist... Al

It doesn't work with a monitor attached, which I have 80% of the time.

I love my GH2, and after over a year of shooting with it, I know how to do this stuff with both auto and manual lenses by muscle memory, but reading this makes my head hurt :-)
