Focal Length of Lens Hood

Buying 43mm circular polarizing filter (either Formatt hi-def or B+W 65075315) for HMC40. I have learned I will need a lens hood that will allow me to rotate filter. B+W makes one for 43 mm but says it is designed to match focal length of standard 50mm lens. If I understand HMC40 spec, lens is 40.8 mm.

Does this mean on full wide shots with standard HMC40 40.8 mm lens that I could "see" the 50mm lens hood on edge of shot?

Probably splitting hairs here but thought I should understand this before I buy this combination of filter and lens hood and then run into the issue on wide shots. Thank you

It may mean that, yes. If I'm understanding what's being asked and what they're saying, then I think your interpretation is correct, there would be a potential of seeing some vignetting on a hood that's meant to match a 50mm field of view and using it on a lens that matches a 40.8mm field of view.

Thanks Barry and we are on same page--I will look around for another lens hood. Learning more and more from your book by the way--it seems a necessary supplement to the owner's manual PDF.

Dennis,

I use the B+W circular polarizer on my HMC40. When I'm outside, it is usually parked on the cam. You can adjust it with the lens hood on. It does take a little fiddling and you probably won't be able to do it while in back of the cam. But it is workable looking at the LCD from the side, so if you can live with that, there is no real need for a new lens hood.

Dennis,

I'll post a photo of the soft lens hood I use with my wide angle, it might be a workable solution if you want better access.

After looking at the soft hood, it wouldn't work for this application. I am going to start a new thread so if you want to see it, check in the HMC section for it.

Edit: I did find a solution for mounting the soft hood and it works fine, see the other post.

Grant, Thanks for input. I'll try your first suggestion and I agree the soft hood might not be the best choice for this application. Dennis

For $14.95 I decided to try the B+W lens hood with the B+W polarizing filter (re my original post)--and "we" were right--you do see some vignetting on full wide angle--it is not until you zoom to 15 that you don't "see" lens hood in shot. So, for other novices, another detail to note: check the focal length of lens hood you are looking at buying to see how it matches up with focal length of camera lens.
