Flying with a set of lenses

I have a 1510 but don’t think its deep enough to protect the camera and lenses. I know I was only talking lenses but now think the whole kit should be with me onboard.

Agreed camera body and lenses are on my persons at all times. I'll take the chance checking the support and monitor.

I have the Think Tank Airport Security and really love it. Can fit 2 AF100s and 8 lenses (including the 14-35 and 35-100) plus a Zacuto EVF with Z-Finder. Really amazing how much you can pack into one of these bags.

Bit of a tip for avoiding airlines snatching your carry-on if you can't manage to board early. A lot of times they'll start collecting carry-ons before the bins are actually full - they just anticipate they will be and want to get a step up on things. The tip is to NOT use the rollers. Carry your bag when you get close to the door. They have their eye out for roller bags because they tend to be the largest. If you can get your bag past them and on board, even if space is tight they can usually manage to fit it in. This has been my experience at any rate.

That said, maybe I've just been lucky on a couple of flights. If they insisted on checking my Think Tank through, I think I'd probably freak. Will probably go the suggested FedEx route in the future, when possible.

I'm going with the Think Tank Airport Security V 2.0. Thanks for the suggestions. This loks like a great case for onboard travel with camera, lenses and whatever else I can cram in it.[h=1][/h]

Honestly, I've found little point in locking the cases for domestic travel. Each time I've done that, I've gotten bags with no more locks on them.

I usually ziptie checked cases, and almost always forget that the tools to cut the zipties are packed inside one of those cases!

Yes, I am that guy sitting on the LAX curb trying to cut a ziptie with my keys while waiting for my ride. :(

Here, I use one TAS lock all the time, although I don't think our security guys have keys to open it. The criminals might have them.

Cheers.

I just flew last week and flew with my AF100 packed like so,
Checked Bags: x3
Pelican 1610: weighs in at about 60-65 pounds, has all my redrock support, mattebox, etc. As well as all my audio, filters, handheld rig, gopros, hmc150 all packed snugly
Tuffpack Tube: Sachtler tripod and CF sticks, as well as boomtube with KTEK boompole
Suitcase: personal clothes, and random tools, pouches, cleaning stuff etc

Carry on
Pelican 1510: Af100 body, 60d body, batteries, chargers, marshall monitor, etc
Photo backpack: tokina 11-16, nikon 24mm 2.0, zeiss ZF 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, Olympus 14-35mm, olympus 35-100, canon 18-135mm, macbook pro 17"

This setup allows me to fly without paying any bag fees, and preboarding allows me to always make sure everything ends up in the overhead bins. On small regional jets the pelican 1510 gets gate checked, and the lenses come on board with me and fit into the overhead even on the small embraer 145s.

Oh and forgot to add, i ziptie all the cases as well
