Fluorescent Lights

Hey All,

Have a question about working with the DVX under fluorescent light. Shooting in 24P, and there are a couple of setups where we are shooting under fluorescent light. We won't be able to swap them out for kinos, and I have done some tests and gotten some strobing and flickering in a few cases. Any advide on settings/ways to avoid/minimalize this? I like the look of the lights as long as I can avoid the flicker. Thanks!

Re: Fluorescent Lights

The flickering occurs due to shutter speed being shorter than the electrical frequency (USA 60Hz and EUROPE 50Hz).
This means that you need to have a minimum shutter speed of 1/60 or turn it off if you want a flicker free footage.
Modern video/photo lights are solving this problem with "ballasts", which give a very high frequencies of light.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Re: Fluorescent Lights

Also, switching the Cinne Matrix to FLUO will boost your warm colors so people don't look pale and green.

Re: Fluorescent Lights

If you're getting flicker, try a longer shutter speed (in 24p, try 1/36 or so) and see if that helps.
