FluidHead diy?

as fun as this would be and as impressed as i am with some of you guys' technical knowledge. i agree with greg in that you get into a situation of demand vs effort.

anyone who can justify the NEED for an $11,000 head or has $500,000 of gear to put on a head, PROBABLY has no problem with a head costing $11,000

Damn! There you go ruining a good thread with REALITY.... I am getting Pi**ed off with it! All my best I ideas get ruined as soon as some one drops some reality on them... :-)

I can understand the price for mo cap or similar being so expensive... but something which tilts smoothly and just supports upto around 60kg for around $11000 is stupid amounts to paying... but it's just the way the industry is.

Now you have me really curious as to what exactly you do in this industry, why you feel the need to own a fluid head which supports 60kg, and exactly which cameras you will be using with this head?

For what it's worth, in my nearly 40 years in the business, I have only purchased 2 new heads. Every other head/legs I own have been purchased used for substantial savings over new.

Have you looked into purchasing used gear?

I believe the discussion is not about a head that handles 60kg so much as a discussion about a quality head that costs $11k. The discussion being, what is in that head that makes it so great and cost so much.

But the two get tied together. Heavy loads = low volume = high cost. That's part of it. Is it 10 times smoother than a $500 head? No, probably not.

It is not about being 10 times smoother than a head costing 10 times as much. It is about being as smooth as a $500 but with a load 10 times heavier. If you put 60kgs on a $500 head and a $11K head after a few hours the $11K head will be a lot smother as the $500 head will probably be broken. You only need to break half a dozen $500 heads (coupled with the cost of the time lost on the shoot to change the head and reset the scene) to quite easily justify an $11K head.

Thank God I have a 2Kg Camera :-)
