Flourescent Lighting Flicker

Is anyone having problems with footage flickering when recorded under flourescent lights? In hallways, offices, etc. Wherever there are flourescent lights all my footage flickers.

Is there a setting to corect this problem, much like adjusting the shutter to correct computer monitor/tv flickers?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

PK

Re: Flourescent Lighting Flicker

I think if you shoot at 1/60 th it should go away

If I'm not mistaken the flo's flicker at 60 cycles so you need to sync with it PK. Is this for your new contest entry you're askin? ;D

Re: Flourescent Lighting Flicker

Maybe  ;D  Unfortunately if I shoot at 1/60th shutter that will cause stuttered motion when panning, correct? I shot at 1/100th and got jerky pans, I would imagine 1/60th would be even worse. D'oh!  Looks like a Catch 22 situation. Flickering lights or jerky pans.

Thanks Mino.

Good one Soliton...I hadn't thought about that. I always forget where PK is.

Re: Flourescent Lighting Flicker

Oh no. I was afraid this would happen. You're asking questions that my "scientifically proven" smaller than average cranium can not answer.

It's 50Hz, which means an even slower shutter speed. Is there any other way around this?

Thanks soliton and mino.

Re: Flourescent Lighting Flicker

Ouch...and your DVX is NTSC correct?

You might get lucky and one of the barry faries will come in the middle of the night with an answer to your dilema.

Re: Flourescent Lighting Flicker

Er... I'm tempted not to answer, 'cause I'm not wanting to earn the nickname mino mentioned...

BUT: P.K., one of your basic premises is backwards. 1/100 = strobier than 1/50. The smaller the number, the longer the shutter is open, and the less-stroby the footage will be. The higher the number, the less time the shutter is open, and the more stroby.

So if you're shooting a PAL camera, 1/25 will be much more motion-blurred and much, much less stroby than 1/100. 1/500 would be like the "gladiator" look of strobing.

So if you're in 50hz territory, try shooting at 1/50 or 1/25, that should eliminate any fluorescent flicker. I shot a PAL video monitor using 24P at 1/50 and there was no flicker, so that should work for you as well...

Uh, ok Barry, but who or what else comes around in the middle of the night granting wishes to the children of the DVX world? ;)

Re: Flourescent Lighting Flicker

Hey Barry...I didn't mean any disrespect, I've just seen people go all day with no answer and then when they wake up, boom...There it is, delivered in the wee hours, an answer to the problem. It's actually very cool ;D

Re: Flourescent Lighting Flicker

Oh, I know there was no disrespect intended! :D I'm just saying that I'm not too sure I want that title, and I'm guessing Barry_S would go along with me on that... :)

Re: Flourescent Lighting Flicker

Thanks a lot Barry. I understood the purpose of shutter speeds but I was mistaken by their effect on the footage. Thanks for the lesson. I will try to shoot some footage this weekend and see if the flicker is removed. Thanks again!
