SHORT: FLOAT - a film by William Robinette

Hey all,

I thought I would start a production journal about a film I am currently writing and pre-producing. The film is called "Float" and it is one of a personal nature you could say. It isn't a narrative in the traditional sense. There will not be a script as there will be no dialogue and the film will be more of a stream-of-consciousness experience then a story.

I do hope to make it visually very interesting (duh!). I plan on continuing to experiment with low frame rate DSLR filming (using burst mode) and doing a number of interesting things with dolly time-laps setups with a few other surprises thrown in for good measure. I want to set a pretty sizable challenge up for myself.

I made a film a couple years ago that will end up being a sister film to this in some ways. It is called "Tone" and if you would like to see the general direction of "Float" (albeit very general) please have a look at it.

Anyway, there is still much figuring out the order of the film and how everything is going to fit together, but I will update that all along the way. I just wanted to get a first post up here to help motivate me a bit to make sure I work on this every day.

Thanks for taking a look.

Interesting visuals. Though to be honest, when it has no narrative and is purely an experimental "narrative", I don't like it when those films drag. By drag I mean be more than 2 minutes or so. You've got to have something to really hook us to bring us along for that long.

When it's a traditional narrative there are always questions to be answered. Who is this guy? Where is he going? How is he going to reach his goal? When there's no narrative it has to rely on visuals and style and editing alone to really hook a viewer, so it's gotta be really good to bring us past 2 minutes. But at least yours isn't too long. Seen some 10 minute experimental films that should have been 2 minutes.

I agree completely, Jon. This film will not go past the 3 minute mark and will hopefully be closer to 2 minutes then anything else. This isn't just some visual masturbation either, I really want to get a feeling across to the viewers. Visuals will play a big part of course, but there will be more to find interesting then that I hope!

Some concept shots I have been doing with long exposure and timelaps. Not great, as I haven't gone out to where light pollution is no longer a problem but these are showing me where the issues in my setup and rig are. All of this was done with a 7D. The WMV compression kills the sky as I haven't tuned it to compress without banding.

You had some great shots, and some nice effects that attributed to the story...i felt my biggest criticism is the sound of the video...at most points it was very silent and then the phone noise seemed out of place.

keep up the good work

Thank you.

Might I ask what you were listening to it on? Only because I have had many positive responses to the sound work and don't want it sounding less then stellar for anyone.

I agree with some of the other posts. Dialogue can be very important to the story. But I really love the shots you have. Beautiful composition.
