Flip LCD

Talking about firmware upgrades.....here's one thing that is almost definitely 'possible' to do....we'll see if there are any engineers on this board.

The HVX already CAN flip the LCD image. It does it when you turn the LCD upside-down to do a self-portrait shot. Does anyone think it'd be possible to implement this via the option menu? So you could either turn this on/off or even control the flipping via the menu? This would help the 35mm adapter crowd a whole lot.

just a thought,

Id go with just the magnet unless you were going to buy an LCD anyway.

This has been hashed out in a previous thread. The magnet doesn't work on the HVX200 or the DVX100B.

The options are using an external monitor upside down or that supports electronic flipping, or using a mirror(s). Yes, a mirror. I already have a optical grade mirror config that works decently for run and gun.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses, but have you guys used an HVX yet?

It already CAN flip it.

The downside is....the camera controls the flipping automatically, so I was wondering how easy/difficult it would be to give the user some manual control over it via the menu system.

I never knew the HVX could flip the LCD until I bought one. I have one now, and it definitely can already flip the image. It can even mirror the image as well (reverse left and right).

hi guys, flip the camera instead. no lcd flipping, no flipping in post:)

Does this mean I won't have to stand on my head any more?

(was problematic with my Flyer).

Great idea except the LCD would be on the wrong side of the camera.
Are you right handed or left handed?

If you're a southpaw, an upside-down camera may suit you well!

James Webb!! Wow. You exist! Thanks again, from way back when, for helping tons of people by posting pics of your adapter. ;)

I'm glad I could contribute to the cause. ;)

Btw, I contacted Dan Diaconu the other day and he sent me a link to your work - nice stuff. I own the M2 now. And I just got my HVX the other day. Haven't had time to test yet. Maybe tomorrow.

What's you impression of the DD adapter? It's really an elegant design. But with such a high price tag, I couldn't even consider it.

well, flipping the camera is for me an option because I film little children mostly: I'll be doing a lot of steadicam low mode shooting of children that way. on the flyer, you flip the post, and voila, no probs: upside down, boy you turn me....
in other situations I plan on having a small aluminum cage or 15mm rod modification done to allow me to mount the cam upside down on a very low modified manfrotto monopod. We'll see how it goes.

I'll be using: HVX200, Dan Diaconu's MPIC and follow focus, Nikkor lenses, probably the Steadicam Flyer, monopod and tripod. Each scenario is of course different with respect to the practicality of getting to buttons, viewing the onboard lcd etc., but as I often will use an extra lcd screen, flipping the camera might work for me. I'll let you know if it's not a good idea in reality. Dan Diaconu does flip the camera (with smaller camera's) and it's been done with an xl2. Have fun, I do :D

The DD adapter with the HVX200 has slight vignetting and distortion issues. Dan hasn't been able to get a hold of a camera to figure it out. I've tried like mad to get it better than I have it now, but I can't figure out how to perfect it. Most of the time these artifacts don't really matter, as you can probably attest to.

I'd like to know how the M2 is working with the HVX200. Keep us posted. I was going to private message this, but didn't know if you'd get it. I'll try emailing you if I don't hear back from ya.

Cheers!

I don't get it...

If you turn the camera upside down then the image is still going to be flipped.

Think about it... relative to the camera the subject is now upside down, so it shows the right way up on the LCD... the only problem is that the LCD is now upside down.

If yout turn the camera upside down while filming with a Redrock adaptor, the footage will be correct. But what a hassle. Just not worth it. It takes seconds to flip the image in FCP.

By flipping, all that needs to be done is rotate the image 180 degrees.

Won't using the camera upside-down for longer periods cause any problems? I remember something about not storing a dvx upside-down because there could be some kind of lubricant leaking.

I could be wrong obviously, but it's not engineered for that, right?

You might also have heat issues. A lot of things are designed to cool passively with rising heat. If you turn them upside down then the heat rises the wrong way.
