Flight case for EX3

Hey EX3 owners -

What do you all use for a flight case for your EX3? I have a porta-brace that I use for gigs in town, but I'm not sure what I will do next time I need to fly with the camera. A friend of mine uses the Pelican 1650 and checks it, but I was wondering if anybody is using a smaller hard case (maybe even one that fits in the overhead)?

What happens when the overheads are full and they ask you gate check though? That's my concern with a soft case.

The Porta-brace I have is pretty similar to that 16x9 bag, it would fit in the overhead, but I would never want them to check it...

I usually say "this is high dollar equipment that was meant to stowed with me". Sometime you can ask to have it put in the hanging bag area right by the door when you come in. Or just put it in there as soon as you get on.

Otherwise you pretty much screwed these days. Either check it in a hard case with other checked bags and hope it gets there to or try as hard and as fast as you can to stow it in overhead somewhere. And don't draw attention to yourself.

Or last ditch have it packed and shipped to location by UPS or Fed EX.

I had a brand new camera stolen from checked luggage and swore 'never again'. They actually shipped the bag around the world to hide for several days the fact that the camera was stolen.

Now I use a soft case similar to those. The curved end helps it fit better in the overhead. I just make sure that as each new section of the plane is called for boarding I'm the first one on in my section.

For my EX1, I'm using a Kata 193. It's a perfect fit in the overhead storage on a 737 or Airbus. On a smaller Regional Jet like a Canadaire, it will easily stow under the seat since the overheads are smaller on those smaller jets. No way will I ever let the camera be checked... I'll get off the plane first. So far after 9 or 10 flights, no one has asked me to check the Kata 913 (even after eyeing it a bit).
