Flashbang?

Hey all, I am looking to recreate a flash bang for Perchance to Dream.

Basically the grenade a tactical team tosses into a room. Flash, smoke, and a huge bang to incapacitate those inside.

Well, I am looking to go for the small flash and smoke. Sans BANG!

Any ideas of where to go for something like that? Only things I can find are continuous release smoke grenades.

Do it in post, it will be safer. As for the bang, put in a buzzing/ringing sound to recreate the effects on your ears.

Well, I was considering it. But what I really need is something to smoke fast. With a tactical team entering I want the smoke to interact with those running. I was more looking to get the basics of the flash bang without the flash bang and without having to composite in post.

If you get a relaly really huge strobe light, or a decent camera flash system ( a big one )you can lock the camera off on sticks, and fire a flash into the room. Get afew of those for saftey, then smoke the room up, fire the flash off again, then in post cut during the flash. This will give the apperance of a bright flash, with the smoke left behind. this is a much better system than doing the flash in post, as the light reacts with the room, bounces off surfaces and it looks much more organic and real (since it is real).

I do this with flashbacks, shoot a flash gun at the characters face in present time, then do it again in the flashback and then cut during the flash. Works every time, and with a nice little whoosh sound, its a surprisingly clean cut, and its obvious that its a flashback (the flash helps) so its a nice little trick, could work here too...

Not in a real one - no. I guess what I was hoping for was the stylized, poof of smoke, flash, add the bang in later.

I will give the strobe a try - if I can get my hands on one. Still open for ideas.

PLEASE, unless you have a professional dedicated stunt cordinator, figure out a way to cheat the shot.

I'd suggest showing a flash via strobe or flagging an hmi through a cracked door over a team member's shoulder, then cutting to a reverse shot of the team running into the room filled with smoke. Or something like that.....

I've shot with swat teams on multiple occasions, and even when you know a flashbang is about to go off, you still never know what will happen.

I hate to sound like your mom, but "Safety First"

Thinking about it, you don't even have to show a flash. You could have a team member throw in the "flash" and slam the door. Just add the sound of a bang in post.

Next, fog your room (cheap smoke machine from party store). Tape flashlights to all over your talents guns, as well as pump hard light behind them through the door.

I believe this will give you that contrasty "look" that you see in so many shows and films.

DJ,

No worries about the safety. I would never jeopardize the safety of my set. Stunning my team is not on my todo list.

And I think you hit the nail on the head. I think that is exactly what I am looking to do with fogging the room. Thanks!
