GH1 Flash options

I'd like to start working/experimenting with flash photography. My employer has two Alien Bee flash units that work with a wired sync cord. But my GH1 doesn't have one of those little flash connection ports. Sorry I don't know my lingo for this stuff since I'm totally new to flash photography. Is there a way I can hook these up to my GH1?

Also as far as portable flashes go, what are my options?

Hi,

you can buy a remote trigger system off ebay for starters and hook those flashes up through them. That way you´d have to set them up manually as no TTL (through the lens) metering info can come from the camera to the flash. But with a little trial and error you´ll get good results. Most of those kits come with one remote trigger (goes on your cameras hot shoe) and two receivers (powered by AA batteries) onto which you put your flashes. Many triggers support more than two receivers though. You can work quite cheaply with third party products (for example Yongnuo) that way.

As for on-camera flash with TTL and stuff I personally use a Metz 48F. Those are good quality flashes, strong, and not insanely expensive.

Thank you for the info. I've seen these wireless trigger before, a photographer friend of mine used to use them before switching to all speedlites. I guess I didn't realize they could work with the GH1 as well. I'll have to get some.

Yeah go ahead. Those use only the common to all central contact of the hot shoe, which basically only sais "Shoot!".

i use a cactus V5 trigger set and an olympus fl 50r flash because i wanted hi shutter speed sync. if you think you will need that then you have to make sure the flash supports it. also the new panasonic flash looks like the olympus flash just rebadged =) i could be wrong

The sockets are called PC-sockets. It's easy to fit a wired synch cord to a camera without a PC-socket, but which has a hotshoe. What you need is a "hot shoe to pc adapter". They are dirt cheap and widely available. Just Google that word string and you will get loads. You just put it on the hotshoe and plug in the cord.

The Metz flashes are probably the best as they are better value than the Panasonic or Olympus flashes, and in some cases better. Mind you that's on UK prices and I'm not sure what the price situation is in the US. They do little dedicated TTL flashes like the 24 AF-1 right up to big 58 AF-1.
