FLASH FLIX ON2 VP6 codec, is it the best to encode movies for the web?

Wanted to provide a thread dedicated to the ones who want to gather information about encoding their movies into flash.

It seems since flash became a good alternative to quicktime, windows media player and real player, it hasn't really caught on among film makers themselves.

the question is: is ON2 better than sorenson? here are multiple samples side by side:

the ON2 VP6 codec:

The Flix encoder can do multipass, here is their forum:
http://www.flixforums.com/index.php

flash has a high penetration of userbase, but requires player 8 or later to use the On2 VP6 codec what do you guys think

flash penetration vs quicktime etc:

flash player version penetration:

flash player 8 or higher test (flash 6 doesn't do ON2):

if settling for flash 6 and higher, perhaps sorenson spark is the way to go?:

a discussion on why flash decided to go with on2 vp6 versus H.264 and others

sorenson doesn't require as much computer power by the user, from adobe site:

the thing that would be the most welcome is if people could post their own resources, where to find information, tools, forums, etc.

but most of all, samples of the different compression tools matched against each other or peoples sites with the information of how it was encoded

thanks

Thank god for all this information.

This question gets asked about once a week, only people are trying to post yucky quicktime files!

Nobody likes to download anything to watch your video, this is a player that is on alot of comptuers alerady. Use it to your advantage.

OK, so i've also recently cottoned onto flash video as an alternative to QT. I'm impressed with the results to say the least. On the debate between ON2 & Sorenssen spark, i've tested both and find that spark produces cleaner edges and more vibrant colour replication, but has a few nasty artifacts and fuzzy patches, especially in faster moving shots, while ON2 is a little softer & duller, but doesn't have the problem of artifacting and fuzziness.

Has anyone else experienced this?

good, i am glad people are paying attention to this

i wonder if we could get a couple of samples going, with different bitrates and sizes etc. that way eventually we could get reactions of what works best on a lot of different computers

Like what is the painlevel for most computers for immediate playback, what bitrate is really maximum for the movie to start playing right away and then to keep playing without those irritating stops

plus, what is the complexity that most computers can handle in terms of decoding the image and displaying it, how many frames a second and at what size is really practical for most users of this forum to watch it without irritating stutter

why would quicktime be better than flash (to get people to have a copy on their desktop?)

Alot of production houses are still operating off of Avid Media composers running solely on OS 9. OS9 has no support for Flash video period, since the last version of flash made for OS9 was Flash6 (Flash is on version 9 right now) So the video functions just dont work for guys running OS 9 *cough cough* Fox Television Studios *cough*
