Flash Banding Example and Discussion

I just completed a live performance video of an instrumental rock band, and I ran into the flash banding problem. (see attachments)

I was shooting at 720/24p AVC-I 50.

My questions:

Can anything be done to minimize this occurrence?

If I had to repair the footage my options would be to a) buy an expensive plug in to correct the problem or b) pull the frame, correct it in Photoshop, and stick it back in the timeline.

If you have any thoughts ro best practices, please share them.

This was the only time it happened over 30 minutes, but I can imagine where this could be a real nightmare with this camera.

For future reference, you can shoot in 60i/60p and enable "Flash Band Compensation" and it should prevent most artifacts. Not sure what to do to fix footage you already have besides hand correcting if there aren't too many flashes going off.

I remember reading a thread on another board with a very similar problem, what the other poster did was to simply insert a single opaque white frame over the offending one.To his client all they saw was a flash just as they would expect from a flash gun going off. maybe this could help?

Just like Knox said above, FBC will help with the problem, you can only use it in 1080 60i or 720 60p (with shutter off in 720 mode).

or you can jut live with it. most people other than video professionals dont even notice the flash banding.

If you look at TMZ or Enews daily, alot of EX1 footage is used for redcarpet events, and there is flash banding everywhere... ive never heard anyone watching it other than people on DVXuser, say, god taht looks weird, or "yuck rolling shutter".

just doesnt happen.

anyone has a problem with it, expalin its part of the new HD cameras, nothign can be done about it.

honestly, other than the HPX170, hvx200, JVC ( and that has a whole different set of issues) i dont think theres another CCd prosumer camera available right now?
