Flare?

AF with Nikkor 35 f/1.4 (shot at ~ f/2.8) plus polarizer yielded wacky handkerchief flare. Thoughts anyone?

You lost a lot of detail in the guy's face, too!
Are you getting a bounce off the polarizer glass?

I'm guessing it is from the polarizer too.

do you have a UV/haze filter on that Nikkor? I noticed I had flare and ghosting until I removed the UV filter from all my lenses.

I do have a UV on the lens.
