Flame me all you want but....

What worries me about the release of the HVX200 is that I keep hearing people say that they've seen these non-production models being demo'd as of recent...all the way up until this date. The fact that they are still tinkering on it up until about a month before its release scares the **** out of me, I mean talk about cutting it close....Looks like they are really rushing things as far as the camera goes, I truly hope there isn't some severe problem as was with the jvc. Now we can all be pretty much be assured that there will be an HVX200a model in the near future.

You raise a good point. But let's wait till after the news comes pouring out tomorrow afternoon before anyone really starts to drop the proverbial load in the hypothetical pants.

Twenty-first century just-in-time manufacturing is a miracle because it *allows* design improvements so close to actual production. They aren't rushing the camera to market, they're taking advantage of modern development and manufacturing practices. Panasonic is delivering on schedule and there is *zero* evidence that there are any technical issues with the camera. How in the world are you assured that Panny will be releasing an HVX200a? Based on what? The DVX100"a" model wasn't released to address any technical problems. It was released to add additional features in response to user requests. I'm still using an original DVX100 and I can assure you, there are no issues with it. The HVX development is a step beyond the DVX because Jan solicited a lot of user suggestions long before the cameras release. By her own admission, Panasonic incorporated many suggestions from this board. So the "a" is already cooked into the HVX. Seriously, you need to chill and wait for the camera.

:) Funny. But really, I don't think there is going to be anything to complain about.
Panasonic is betting quite a lot on this little bundle of HD joy and they know thay can't deliver a lemon. There will be an ever so slight number of bad apples because of manucatuing and other issues, but the production cameras should be dandy.

I would be surprised if there weren't any minor issues with it. Probably not anything to worry about or not get the cam for. Something as complex as the HVX would be difficult to get it 100% the first time. I know people who work in R&D in other electronics field and they tell me it's common to release products with very minor issues. I know nothing about the HVX design so hopefully it's close to perfection.

Sorry Barry but you can never have enough time in pre-production....Especially when it comes to a camera as important as the HVX is to Panny.

There was no evidence that the JVC had any issues either.

I'm with Mr.Blonde. Panny hasn't shown a fully functional camera yet, and they plan to deliver production models in 3 weeks. That's gotta raise some concerns.

I'll probably buy one eventually, but I'm going to wait a few months to see how things turn out.

In software they sure release quite a few bug-infested products, only there's not going to be any downloadable hardware "patch" for the HVX.

On the eve of the big rollout, I'd bet big this isn't going to be a bomb. I think it'll be a high-res version of the DVX; very good but no f-900.

So if you can never have enough time developing a product, then every product must be rushed.

By your opinion, the fact that there was no indication of a problem with the JVC cam, assures you there will be a problem with the HVX? Uh, ok sport. :)

Your comparing apples and oranges. jvc and panny. why don't we all just wait until the camera is actually released and then you can give your opinions about it. eh?!

Maybe not downloadable but it will be possible to take it in to your local Panny Authorized Repair shop and get the camera's flash memory card updated with new firmware lickety split. You may not even have to bring your camera in at all. Just pop the card out and off you go. And just for clarity sake, I'm not talking about a P2 card here, I'm talking about the main card for the camera's settings which looks closer to a chip than an actual card.

Don't worry. Panny's got you covered.

THAT will be cool.

Only company where I've called the service number in the back of the manual and got a helpful and knowledgeable human being on the line in just a few minutes. No demand for support fees or anything.

me thinks you worry too much.

The bottom line is that a 1 month turn around from experimental HVX model to production ready model is quite steep no matter which way you put it. And Barry, I never said that there WILL be a problem, I'm just concerned and hoping for the best, but as a consumer knowing a bit about the production process, i'd have to say the the turn around time from post to production is quite ballsy. I honestly would prefer waiting a month or two extra just so that they get it right without a doubt.

The thing is, Panasonic has been doing this for a while, y'know? On the one hand people are clamoring "why is it taking sooooooo long" and now we have people saying "why are they rushing it?" I mean, come on. At some point you have to recognize that this is one of the biggest consumer electronics companies in the world, with some substantial experience in producing and releasing products like this.

If waiting makes you feel better, go ahead and wait. But for those who don't want to wait, I think it's a reasonable assumption to say that it won't be released until they're certain they got it "right".

If you think about it Panasonic probably has had most of the parts (lens, body mold, tape drive, etc) being churned out for many months now. My understanding is that the camera was 80% done 3 months ago. That is enough probably to get people working on the main bulk compenents of the camera. When they locked the camera in a few weeks ago, they just have to start slapping them all together, running thru quality control, package, and ship. No worries.

There is certainly room for panasonic to have made a major boo-boo along the way but I certainly don't see anything in their release schedule that seems unreasonable or rushed.

Cheers

does it also frighten you that some movies are not finished until 2 weeks prior to their release?

or that companies work on software right up until the final ship date?

you must be a very scared person...
