Flaat picture styles for the 5D3

I've been working on Flaat v2 for the 5D3, here's what I've found:

* the good news: picture styles for the old cameras work just as well on the 5D3; that includes CineStyle, and of course Flaat; cutting 5D3 and 5D2 footage shot with the same picture style should be relatively easy, at least in terms of light and color

* the bad news: this means that, compared with my old APS-C canon, with the same picture style, dynamic range is basically the same; if the 5D3 has any extra DR to offer in video mode, it will require new picture styles

* the even worse news: it's not easy to get more dynamic range with picture styles; the information is there, I can see it playing with the RAW stills in DPP, but no matter how hard I fight with the picture style editor, so far 11.5 stops seems to be the limit; unless Canon gives us a new way to control how the RAW information from the sensor is converted to video footage, the 5D3 has exactly the same DR as the 60D or the old rebel

* the still unknown: even if DR is not any wider, useable DR may be better, given the 5D3's lower noise levels and hopefully improved codec; so if you have a 5D3, try Flaat_12p and let us know how it looks!

you'll see there's a name change, now they are called by the number of stops of DR that they get:
Flaat_1 is now Flaat_09 (slightly modified)
Flaat_2 is now Flaat_10 (very slightly modified)
Flaat_3 is now Flaat_11 (very slightly modified)
Flaat_4 is now Flaat_12 (very slightly modified) (it doesn't get to 12 stops, but it's more than 11)

also, there are two sets of picture styles:
* one based on Portrait, for nice skin tones, but with some color shifts (e.g. blue goes a bit towards cyan)
* one based on Neutral, without those color shifts
I always use the ones based on Portrait, the others I only made them because some people wanted to avoid any color shifts. I'd rather have nice skin tones than correct blue, but it's your choice.

Also, note that the recommendation for Tone has gone from =0 to =1.

I haven't tested that; it may help increase the recorded DR, but I'm not very optimistic; I'll look into it - in any case, what would help nearly for sure is Magic Lantern: those guys are amazing, they're digging deeper and deeper into the image pricessing in the camera; if ML for the 5D3 had the same options as it has on the 5D2, it would definitely lead to extended DR, maybe so much so as to match DR in RAW stills mode

Investing in the 5D MK III seems more and more like a wildcard, speculating that Canon and/or Magic Lantern will push the limits in the future.

well: with added sharpness, it's looking already pretty good - except the improvements in the codec are not huge (or even: there), and DR is basically the same (maybe increased if you're picky at what's useable and what's not: 11 stops and over on the old cameras displayed lots of noise in the heavily-pushed-up shadows; further real-world testing is needed, but I would expect the 5D3 to look a lot cleaner) - I'm still torn between the 5D3 and the D800, but I'll definitely buy one of those (and in any case: I'm working on a version of Flaat for the D800 too)

muchas gracias

The Zacuto shootout shows more highlight latitude on the 7D compared to the FF Canon's.

no, they got the 7D and 1D4 too

Thanks for the detail. But I didn't express myself clearly. I meant that they probably still not tested the MK III. Just wishful thinking from my side that there is a stop or so of more usable latitud.

I guess they must be testing the 5D3, at a minimum to make sure it works with all their kit (viewfinder)
there's definitely more latitude available... in RAW stills - in video, unless ML cracks the thing, picture styles won't get you above 11.5
(the other alternative would be for Canon to give somebody -read: Technicolor- access to the camera's deep processing parameters, even if ML can't alter them)

Hi. You get the full suite after making a donation. Or you can write me an email (there's an address in the very bottom of the page) and I'll send it to you.

In any case, don't expect miracles: Flaat_12 is a last resort, it does bring up some detail in the shadows, but noise creeps up visibly.

I've been shooting Flaat10 since I got my 5DMk3 10 months ago and couldn't be happier with it, though I have reduced the Chroma to -4 for most interview situations but keep Chroma at -2 for general outdoor b-roll.
