fishermans warf 5min short

Northern Dreamer
Well…here it is, my five minute short “Steveston Fish Market” I’m putting it here for you guys to rip apart before I do the final stuff. I hate the music but it’s all I could find for free. So let me know what you think, what you’d change and yada, yada. I’m aware that it’s all handheld, didn’t have tri-pod at the time. I need feedback.

I'm workin on your version PK

Thanks Gang.

Re: fishermans warf 5min short

Thanks mino. Can't wait to see it. Fisherman's Warf is a beautiful location. Any grabs?

Re: fishermans warf 5min short

I like the video.  It's a little long for the content.  The only thing I don't like is the music... but what do I know?

Oh yea.. there's a spot where two people are staring at you and the camera. I would edit that out.

Re: fishermans warf 5min short

Mino,

I think your piece has good potential but it suffers from a number of problems:

1. Try to start a piece like this with a few wide establishing shots. Your opening shots are too tight and the viewer doesn't get a sense of where these scenes fit into the larger picture.

2. Get yourself a tripod, even if it's just a cheap one you can buy at Target for $30. Handheld gives an instant amateur look. It's fine for some genres, but not for this type of work, imo.

3. Your scenes are way too long. In fact, I think the piece is way too long, mainly because you are using the same kind of shots throughout. You could have easily conveyed the same amount of information much more efficiently in an edit one third this length.

4. Try to find some interesting camera angles. Get down on your hands and knees and shoot from the ground. With the wide Leica lens, you can get some great perspective shots doing this. Also, look around you and find interesting shapes, like in the sails or edges of boats or find someone that's just staring out to the water, things like that. Instead of trying to get a hundred shots, take the time to compose well and get 20 shots.

I don't know if you are trying to get a filmic look, maybe you aren't and the style you used is similar to travel show type shots. If you are looking for something to be more filmic, avoid excessive panning, kill the zooms completely (I never use the zoom button while recording). You can get some slow steady moves with the camera without using a tripod. One thing that I do when I have no tripod is put the camera on the ground, make a fist and rest the middle of the camera on it and use my fist as a pivot to slowly tilt the camera up to a scene...things like that can make a big difference to your overall production value.

Anyway, I'm rambling here. This is a long process of learning and it's great that you are actually shooting and editing.

Good job.

Re: fishermans warf 5min short

disjecta, for your information. We like it when you ramble, so please ramble on anytime :).

Mino: Its true about the piece being a bit too long. Nice work over all though.

Re: fishermans warf 5min short

Thanks for comments and critique. This was shot two summers ago two weeks after I got the camera and I have improved a lot since. I put this together by grabbing the best of the shots I took. I do have a tripod now and am going back to that spot to reshoot everything this year. The edits are too long...That's me trying to stretch out the material I have into a short without it being 30 second spot. This type of shooting is hard for me because I get really self concious shooting in public I usually tromp off in the bush where there are no people. The irony is that I love shooting people. Anyone got any words of wisdom on that? I'm basicly a shy kind of person who doesn't like people much unless I know them. hate it when people ask, what kind of camera is it and what are you shooting etc. I always thought it would be nice to be invisible while filming. Anyway I don't want to turn this reply into a couch session...Not a lot I can do with that material except re shoot this summer and find some better music, or learn to play that damed Roland in the corner :)
Thanks again for the feedback.

Re: fishermans warf 5min short

Those grabs are stunning, mino. I love the first two marina shots. The water, the boats, and the sky. Very ominous.  The 3rd shot was taken on a different day (i think), but it's a nice angle and good composition. The fish heads are just bizarre. Now I can't get that song out of my head. "fish heads, fish heads, roly poly fish heads...." Ahhhhhhhhhh  >:(  Now you must suffer with me.   ;D

Trivia Question: What former child star wrote and performed the "Fish heads" song?

Re: fishermans warf 5min short

Thanks Bluespider,PK...the third grab was shot on a different day, but I fail to see what gave it away?...As far as the fisheads roly poly stuff....Maybe a little Eminem loose yoursell or Strauss is in order and as your physician I order you to stick some headphones on quick! Thanks again for the input guys

Re: fishermans warf 5min short

The eyes on the last fish grab are weird. Are they genetically engineering Sharkmen up there?

Re: fishermans warf 5min short

what's your point with the I can see you stuff? kinda rude I think
I don't mean to get in your face but I'm getting pissed off. I get faxed to death every day by any fool with a fax machine and an autodialer and every clown on the web claims he can see me, I don't freakin need to be reminded that I'm visible. If I had a web cam youd probably find a way to take a snapshot and put that up before me. EEEeshhhhh!!!

overreacting...Me? Sorry havin a bad December. That's nice you can see me, and yes Disjectas work is always totally worth looking at...I do...all the time! :)

Re: fishermans warf 5min short

you did ask us to "rip it apart", so please, no offense, but "wharf" is spelled with an "H". Not being sarcastic, just pointing it out in case you add titles.

Re: fishermans warf 5min short

Hey, no prob. I'm a master at misspelling. I just cringe when I find a typo AFTER I send out the DVD.

My other pet-peeve is using inch marks as quotations. Alas, a problem far beyond my reach...
