First wedding in a week Help and advice?

Hi all,

I am due to film my first wedding this weekend (with a hope of making money from this sort of thing in the future) and I'm just going through the checklist. I've been scanning forums for the past while while I have been amassing equipment on a budget. So I was wondering if you could check over my equipment to let me know If I've got enough, it's up to scratch or if I'm missing out on something :)

Cameras:

Canon hv30 with wide angle lens.
Panasonic gh13 with 14-42 kit lens, canon FD 50mm f1.8 lens and vivitar FD 70-150mm f3.8 lens
(75Mbps GH1 Peak Reliability Patch - V2 update)

Audio:

DM-50 directional mic for the canon
Rode Videomic for the GH-1
sennheiser ew 100 g3 wireless mic set
Zoom H1 (With accessory set)

Other equipment:

Slik pro 700DX tripod legs
Manfrotto 501 HDV tripod head
Cheapo hand made shoulder mount (http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ory=11724&ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1#ht_6379wt_1139)
Sennheiser HD 25-1 II, Closed-Back Headphones
4x 8gb sandisk extreme pro 45mbps sdhc cards
Polarising filter
Extra battery for gh1
2 extra batteries for the hv30

I will be the only one filming so the plan is to set the hv30 up on the tripod on the altar to get a mid range shot of the couple and then I'll run around with the gh1 on the shoulder mount and try to cover as much as possible.

One of the things I was wondering was I have read about people getting line outs from PAs for the event/speeches etc. Would I need to bring any particular leads with me so I could avail of that option should it arise?

any other tips for the first timer?

btw you can see what I have done before here (the favourites are my work too) though I really plan to step up the production value with this latest venture

Read Ryan Brown's wedding tips- it's great:

For audio out of a mixer- it could be an XLR connector, or it could be a 1/4" (headphone) jack.
Either way, it will be a Line Level.
So you could go Line Level into the Zoom (which I imagine is what you want), or if you want to go into the HV30, you could connect by audio cable, or use your wireless, and you would need a line to mic level attenuator ("line pad"):

Have a great shoot!

Cheers for that. I was looking for a thread like that :) I'll stick highlights from the wedding up when it's done. ;-)

Well I've just filmed the wedding. It was certainly an experience. I don't know how anyone could film a wedding alone I was so glad of the help of my gf.

two things from the event.
I ended up using my 50mm 1.8 for the vast majority of the shoot due to it's low light capabilities but that threw up two issues. 1 was that on my gh1 that meant that I was shooting on an equivalent of a 100mm for a lot of the shoot making wide shots difficult, particularly with mister i-phone guy continually getting in the way.
the second was camera shake was a bit more obvious. Naturally that was minimized with my shoulder mount thankfully.

so I was wondering if anyone knew of a good quality legacy prime that would give a wider shot, fast & sharp with a nice bokeh that wouldn't break the bank?

I do 1 man weddings. Its pretty tricky, but once you get the hang of it... you can cover most of the needed things.
Most of the time, your covering a wedding that goes for a day or so long. You end up boiling all that down to about 1hr, and about 5mins for a trailer.
So as long as you capture a few important shots, the rest is mainly filler.
So make a list of the important things to cover, and go over that with your client. If there are any special speeches or performances, then you need to be ready for that (mic and camera already setup).
Then you need to inquire about the setups. Lighting and music most specifically, as this needs lens planning and mic setup.
I really only use my GH2 camera with its kit lens 14-42, and a 35mm f2 Nikon lens.

My wife is usually the photographer, since she shoots Nikon D700... i have a 50mm/85mm/28-70mm/15mm fish handy, but usually never use it.
We both have as a backup a Nikon D7000, but in most situations I never need to use it.
I prefer to shoot mostly with my steadycam, as the GH2 is so light weight its never a burden to carry around all day.
I have sticks and a Gin shoulder mount, which i ONLY use when i'm using Nikon glass. A GoPro2 as a B-Cam, and also a homemade camera "skater" (Slider, with rollerblade wheels that can be turned)

Detail shots - Nikon glass and shoulder mount.
Ceremony and Dancing - Pany Kit Lens and Steady Cam
Creative - Kit and 35mm and GoPro2 camera.
Audio, i usually just have my Zoon H4 plugged into the sound board, mounted on my shoulder rig, or placed under the table where the vows are being said.
I've got a 1000 Lumen LED Video Light if I need it.
1 Extra Panny batt. and a modified GH2 battery adaptor powered by a 6000mAh Lipo pack (it'll run my GH2 for days straight)

Thats my day long wedding setup basically. 1 person can cover a wedding, just needs preparation.
