F55: First, virgin images, from my new F55.

How do you find shooting surfing on S35mm?

I stuck to a fullframe 135 zeiss 1.8, and on the s35 it cropped to around a 200mm, so it was perfect. I especially wanted to see how far I could digitally crop in with the 4k images.

Yeah I shot some on hyper gamma 8 and slog. I think that one was hg8 which was really hard to grade through all the fog and haze.

Nice work, Zach. I'm deep in the Peter Murphy edit (half done), but I can't post.

Since you clearly have an eye for color, you should check out Resolve Lite. I suspect you could figure it out pretty quick.

FCPX timelines go into with zero/very few issues.

Thanks Nate.

I hope that shoot turned out well! Funny thing, I actually tried to get a workflow right with Davinci, but the xmls were not transferring retimed footage, and the xmls were linking to different files. I originally had planned to cut the XAVC and then do an XML round trip, but that ended up being next to impossible. Also resolve was horrendously slow and constantly crashed. I even tried reinstalling it. No clue.

So 3 days went by and I said screw it, so I just exported a prores 444 4k straight into AE, remade all the cuts, and graded.

Resolve does take a little effort sometimes if things aren't going right.

Simple retimed shots should work. "Ramped" shots with multiple retimed segments won't. Maybe Resolve 10.

The slow part is probably your computer/GPU combo. If/when you get a new Mac, you should revisit it. It's lightning fast on my new iMac, can do 10-12 nodes of correction in realtime. 3 years ago that took a very serious Mac Pro and multiple GPU card investment.

If you are cool with the exporting a flat cut out of FCPX, Resolve has tools to automatically notch out your cuts so you can work that way too.

But whatever, your color work is rad, congrats. That shot looking down the main drag being all socked in is amazing. When you get a new Mac Pro, try out Resolve again, I think you'd dig it :-)
