First Typography Video

I just started really learning After Effects about 3 weeks ago. All of my experience the last few years has been with Final Cut but I realized that being familiar with AE is pretty much a MUST for editors these days. Especially ones trying to break into the business.

So this is my first shot at a project. It was a lot more time consuming than I thought but I learned A LOT throughout the process. I know I did a lot of things wrong and I had to go back quite a few times and re-do things.

I know this is nothing groundbreaking, it was more for me to practice and learn. With that said, I'm looking for comments, suggestions, and constructive criticism. If you see something I did wrong or could improve on... tell me.

Welcome to the wonderful world of After Effects!

I think you did a very good job, ESPECIALLY for a first video in AE. I liked how you kept it clean and simple.

I'm not sure if you did this or not, but did you turn on motion blur for all of the text layers, and the global switch? Something about it seemed a little jarring to my eyes, and that's usually the case.

Did you use a camera, or did you bring everything in and out? If you used a camera, kudos! I was well into half a year of AE before trying to bring that variable in.

All in all, good job!

Thanks for the reply. Yes I did turn on motion blur for all of my text layers. I see how that could be a problem. Is there a general guideline to which kind of movements you dont want to use blur on?

I used a camera and null object for all of the movements.

Alright I cleaned up some of it. I took out the blur on a lot of the text zooms and close up pans. I toned down the 8mm film look a little bit and added a slight grain. The video in the thread is now the current version. Let me know if you guys still see any problems or have any suggestions for future projects.

Very well for your first AE video. I agree with Hawk about the blur. Other than that I liked it, Did you use an expression for the wiggle?? If you did great but I think that it did not need it. You already have enough movement on the screen so I think the wiggle is not necessary. This is only my taste but if you like it man then GREAT! I wish my first type project was this good. Keep it up!!

Can you elaborate on the camera/null object?

what exactly are looking for elabloration on?

to create the above mentioned motion do the following to create smooth motion in a 3d environment:
  1. create a camera (ctrl/alt/shift/C).
  2. then create a null object (ctrl/alt/shift/Y).
  3. make the null object a 3d layer.
  4. pick-whip (parent) the camera to the null object.
  5. using keyframes, adjust the position (X,Y and Z) of the null object.
  6. you can also add some "easy ease" through the keyframe assistant or by selecting the keyframe and hitting F9.
add some motion blur to your 3d environment elements and Bobs your uncle.
