First Typography attempt...

pretty cool! It seems linkin park songs are popular for typography for some reason

They have a good quick flow to them. Rap would probably also work, but I'm not much of a rap fan.

Thanks for the encouraging words everyone!

Here's what's I did:
1.) Find a song that isn't slow moving. "Carolina in My Mind" by James Taylor wouldn't work as well. Also, it helps to know the song pretty well (not every word, but the flow of it at least).
2.) I then dropped that track in Final Cut (or Premiere, or whatever else). It's easier than in After Effects for this part. You have to create RAM previews in AE, where you can just press play and listen to the song in FCP.
3.) Progress frame by frame once the words start. Find the frame each word starts on. Write it down. That first verse of the song took me 3 columns on one sheet of paper. This gets tiring, but you start to catch a flow at the end.
4.) Open AE, then create a text layer for every single word. These should all be 3D layers. I grouped each "section" of the verse (for example "I am a little bit of loneliness" is one group ... "a little bit of disregard" is another group) by turning the words around each other, or in straight lines, etc. Trust me, you'll get creative because you'll think "I just did that!"
5.) Start each word on the frame the word starts on. They should be identical (just use the same file) to the FCP recordings you made. RAM preview each section just to make sure.
6.) Add camera, parent it to Null (easier for me to control). I actually did this during Step 4. It helps to keyframe the Nulls position as you go.

That's pretty much it, I think. Oh, and motion blur makes a world of difference. Looks much better with it on! I think I had about 90-something layers. It also helps if you pre comp groups of words for order. Not necessary, though.

You have to create RAM previews in AE, where you can just press play and listen to the song in FCP.

That would be because AE does not make use of codecs since it plays (like Photoshop) all frames uncompressed.

So MEH!!!!

Again Hawk, I think you did a fantastic job. Very VERY impressive, and if this is a "beginners" project from you, you are gonna kick ass.

Well done! Keep em comin!

how did you do the "but its like no matter what"
where the seem to flip down so naturally.

Keyframed the rotation. Started with it offset -90 degrees, moved a few frames, set it to like 40, -10, 5, 0 and used easy ease. I'm sure there's a script that does it for you, but I don't know how to do any of that. I also tried to make sure the previous one would be ending around the same time the next one started.
