First time using the 500...a few questions

I'm working on a bit of footage for my reel and I am finally getting to use the 500 this weekend. I have a few questions for those experienced with the 500:

This footage needs to be able to be mixed with 720p footage from the hvx 200.
Not sure what frame rate and res I want to use (thinking 1080 24pn right now).
Have to shoot to the firestore (which I have only used a few times before). A problem might be that this is a very old firestore and I'm not sure if it is lacking features the new ones have that I've been reading about.
What would be the best workflow setting for the firestore (quicktime? but I'd rather have the mxf files if possible) and could someone elaborate on this part a bit?

Thanks.

1080/24pA is the highest quality mode the camera offers, but if you're matching 720p footage from the HVX, why not shoot 720p?

Make sure the FS-100 is upgraded to at least version 4 of the software.

there is no 1080 24pn mode. pn is only 720. the record modes adn format are identical to the hvx200. so if you shot 720/24pn on the 200, using the same mode on the 500 will give you the same format for editing.

i'm no firestore expert but i have used it a few times. i have been burned with corrupt files in quicktime mode. i think others have as well. probably best to shoot in p2 mode

I see. Alright so I will shoot in 720 but I will definitely shoot some 1080 just so I actually have my own high quality hpx 500 1080 footage to work with and maybe start a new short project with it. It would be a shame to have access to a 500 with a nice hd lens and not get some 1080 footage with it. And p2 mode for the firestore seems the best way to go especially because I do want the mxf files for archiving. I wish I had reserved some p2 cards for this weekend though. Thank you both.

ya. do it. i never shot 1080 on the hvx because i just couldn't see much difference between 720 and 1080. not the case on the hpx. now i shoot 1080 every chance i get. i can see the difference and it looks better.

If I am doing test shots I always set the FS to quicktime, they are simple to work with and a faster approach. When I am shooting (working), I always use p2 mode, not because I personally have had an issue with a resulting QT file, but there has been some reported. So to me its just risk management.
