I looking to buy my first tripod. Any suggestions or direction in making the purchase would be great. Thanks! :)

Re: First Time Tripod Buyer

There have been quite a few threads on this. I would scroll through the first 10-20 pages of the hardware forum. Lots of good info.

Re: First Time Tripod Buyer

you have a great opportunity to benefit from the mistakes of many who went before you...

most people buy a cheap tripod and then many many years later they buy a really good tripod and then curse all the years they had the crappy one.

i'm sure i'll be tarred and feathered if i'm wrong but i would say one of the most common setups on here is a bogen 501 or preferably a 503 head and for the legs i have the 525mv

you usually don't buy them separately, its cheaper to get a combo.

i got my 503/525mv combo evsonline.com call there and ask for rush, he gives a discount if you mention dvxuser.com

Re: First Time Tripod Buyer

I just purchased a 503/525mv combo, and I love it. I had a cheap tripod, and I can say that a good quality tripod like the Bogen/Manfrotto is my most useful and appreciated accessory.

Re: First Time Tripod Buyer

503/525 definitely a high quality lightweight tripod :) The adjustable extension pan handle is coo for those high angle shots that last all day. ;)

NMR=Nuclear Magnetic Resonance ???

Re: First Time Tripod Buyer

You might also want to look into Libec's tripods. Both B&H and EVS carry them and the LS-35 (now just replaced by the LS-37), is a great tripod. I "found" it at NAB last year and couldn't be happier.

Ask the guys at EVS (Rush or Tommy). Libec has also recently released a zoom controller that waorks with both Lanc and Panasonic cameras.

Check out more info at their web site.

hope this helps.

Re: First Time Tripod Buyer

Hey Rush, you got the NMR right! I did research my whole career until I started teaching a few years ago. Now I got this video bug!!!

Re: First Time Tripod Buyer

Interesting. Sort of like MRI? Magnetic Resonance Imaging? What is it used for?

Re: First Time Tripod Buyer

NMR and MRI are the same principle. You put a sample into a very high magnetic field, and if the nuclei in the sample have spin angular momentum (like hydrogen or carbon-13), the spins split into those in alignment with the magnetic field and those against. There is a Boltzmann distribution of the two states, and slightly more in the lower (aligned with the magnetic field) state. If you apply an RF pulse, you can cause the spins to "flip", and observe the transition back to the lower energy state. That is the principle behind NMR and MRI.

Stop that, damn it! You're reminding me of my early college years as a chemistry major... wow does that seem like a long time ago. ;D

Re: First Time Tripod Buyer

Sorry for the reminder, just trying to answer Shaw's inquiry about what NMR is.

Speaking of college reminders, I still find myself daydreaming about the old college daze. But then, I went to a liberal arts college in upstate NY where the female:male ratio was around 2:1 and the drinking age was 18. Damn, those were good days ;D ;) :D

Re: First Time Tripod Buyer

I was a book worm, never had fun until after college when I didn't have exams anymore ;D

jje1, the tripods suggested are excellent starters, including the 755B legs and 3221WN as well. What is your budget for the tripod? There is a new Bogen lineup that just hit the market, check it out on www.bogenimaging.us :)

Re: First Time Tripod Buyer

Oh Matthewd5 how right you are. That's why I'm searching threads looking for a tripod. For YEARS I was shooting (VX2K) with my crappy Sony tripod thinking how cool the lanc handle remote was. Then last year I was on a shoot with a bunch of XL1 shooters and they all had these Manfrottos and Bogens. I couldn't believe how smooth their action was. I was cursing my previous years of being "frugal". About to shoot a feature and some corporate work I've gotta get something. This thread has helped. Rush I'll be calling soon. Got a meeting with the money people tomorrow actually. Will hopefully be doing some sports action work. Panning and tilting will be called for in abundance as well as some steady framing while basketball is being played. Vibrations are a concern of mine as the action takes place on wooden floors. Sandbags necessary?

Re: First Time Tripod Buyer

There is a similar "aw-crap" moment when you've been using a Bogen for years and then you get to try a Sachtler or Miller, or a Cartoni Delta. There's a noticable improvement in durability, stability and pan/tilt fluidity at each higher level of tripod cost. I use the 503 now but my heart longs for a Miller 30 with carbon fiber 3-stage sticks and a 100mm bowl. There are tripods out there that cost more than the DVX. Are they better? YES. Are they as incrementally better as their 10X the cost would suggest? NO. The law of diminishing returns applies to tripods.

Re: First Time Tripod Buyer

I use a pretty nice Sachtler on a regular basis when I shoot freelance BetaSP. It's a great setup, but to be honest, I prefer my 503. I think what I'm missing is the counter balance springs. The pans are smooth as silk, but the tilts can be a problem.
