I don't suppose you are still reading but

I would love to know which of the Sony tripods you were using.

The top two Sony's have fluid (oil) heads. I doubt that they are nearly as good as the Manfrotto/Bogdens but where I am (japan) they are a lot chceaper and I do like the remote LANC　in the arm.

I am thinking of buying the VCT 1170RM at about 400

Because the bogden 503 costs 400 just for the head, and it has no remote.

And my budget is about $400.
 
The LANC thing is a complete gimmick in my opinion, the manual control on the camera will always do a better job. That fluid head isn't a true fluid head (not even a decent fake one like the 501). There's packages available for the 501 head & leg combo that's within your budget; or try to save up another $100 and get the 503 combo.
