Thanks to Jarred for starting this sub forum.

As we all know, 3D applications are getting better, more prolific (in both apps and abilities), dropping in price, and are becoming more integrated with video work. Since there are more titles thank you can shake a midget at, this forum can cover all titles, and hopefully will be used as a place to ask both software specific and general 3D questions, and how they are integrated and utilized in video/film production.

From Camera Mapping, to character animation, from Poser to Maya, Particles, Dynamics, and live plate integration, let the learning begin.

I'm a Lightwave user, and have a ton of reference material and links to share.

Start posting questions, and let's get to expanding our arsenals.

Peace out, and get your tutorials and learning caps on.

Yo Hudson, how's that plane comin?

is there a lightwave version for mac?

Being new to the list... I don't know if anyone is even reading this thread any more, but I will put my two cents in. There are so many packages. I have used Lightwave, Maya (a little), SoftImage and MAX. MAX is my primary app and has been for well over a decade. I admit that more than once, I have considered switching back to SoftImage or MAYA, but the last few years have been good to MAX.

EASE of USE... MAX is king over MAYA. Until recently, MAYA could get a better look out of the box (with rendering). But to tell you the truth, they are so close to the same package that it really is mute. MAYA is for PC and MAC, MAX is PC only. The look almost the same and they function very similarly. Now that MAYA is part of the MAX (Autodesk) family, the last release of both packages have seen similar improvements and the buzz is that they will be one in the not to distant future.

All of that said, there are so many packages and all of them are better at different things. At the end of the day, it is more about skill and effort than it is about which 3D app you are using.

I believe that it was mentioned earlier, but there is another app called ZBRUSH, which is really for high end modeling/detailing and normal map creation, but a new package just released that is inifinitely more powerful and promising than ZBRUSH and it is called MUDBOX. I believe the address is just MUDBOX.com. From what I seen, it is very powerful. I have heard great things about it and aparently it does many things that ZBRUSH doesn't do.
